Occupy Maine adjusts, beefs up security watches after chemical bomb attack

PORTLAND, Maine — Members of Portland’s Occupy Maine encampment have increased security shifts and moved their kitchen area to within view of nearby Cumberland County Courthouse video cameras after a chemical bomb incident early Sunday morning.

“We moved the kitchen away from the road, so we’re not as vulnerable to a potential attack like that,” said Macy Lamson at Occupy Maine’s tent community in Lincoln Park Tuesday.

Fellow Occupy Maine member Shane Blodgett said police told the demonstrators, who are camped out in part in protest of corporate influence on government, that investigators have a suspect in the case. A call to the Portland Police Department seeking to confirm that claim was not immediately returned.

Police believe somebody threw a chemical bomb from a vehicle — witnesses claim to have seen a silver sedan, possibly a Toyota or Nissan — passing by the encampment, which has been in place for more than three weeks and consists of nearly 40 tents. The explosive device landed in an area under tarps set up for storage and kitchen uses. Occupy Maine members said that although nobody was seriously hurt, at least six people were nearby and could have been injured or killed under different circumstances.

“It was no small noise, that’s for sure,” Lamson told the Bangor Daily News. “It lifted a table up that would have taken two people to lift, so it was no small force, either. It didn’t cause a fire, but it was dangerous.”

Portland police Lt. Gary Rogers, speaking earlier in the day Tuesday, said “typically a chemical bomb is made in a plastic bottle with common household items, that, when combined, can cause some expansion and then an explosion.”

Lamson said that — in addition to moving the kitchen area from its original location alongside the Congress Street border of the park to the opposite side, near the courthouse — the group is increasing its security watch teams from two to four people per shift. She reiterated that there are no plans to abandon the occupation in light of the attack: “We’re standing strong.”

“Emotionally, it brought us all closer together,” Blodgett said. “The attack was on our camp, a camp that we share. We all felt threatened by it, so we all pulled closer together.”

Rogers said investigators are not certain Occupy Maine was the specific or only target of whoever threw the chemical bomb. Around 3 a.m., officers on duty heard another loud noise similar to the explosion at the Occupy Maine site. That was about an hour before the Lincoln Park bomb went off, Rogers said, but police never located a second explosion site.

The officers were responding to a call at the corner of Cumberland Avenue and Chapel Street, behind City Hall, when they heard the first noise coming from the southwest.

Rogers said the department has dealt with reports of young people experimenting with explosive materials before, but doesn’t remember another situation where the bomb was thrown in “an assault” at other people.

“An incident like this, where it’s thrown from a moving vehicle passing by, it’s probably the first time we’ve seen something like this,” Rogers said.

Since Occupy Maine was established early this month to support the larger Occupy Wall Street movement, other occupations have sprouted up in Bangor and Augusta.

Guidelines for posting on bangordailynews.com

The Bangor Daily News encourages comments about stories, but you must follow our terms of service.

In brief:

  1. Keep it civil and stay on topic
  2. No vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.
  3. People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked.

The primary rule here is pretty simple: Treat others with the same respect you'd want for yourself. Here are some guidelines (see more):

Violent attack is always to be taken seriously, especially if it goes beyond verbal assault into the realm of bodily harm. It is clear now, from the report above, that this is an explosive bomb that had significant power, and which could have killed people if they were in closer proximity.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE! This is a despicable method of attack involving a homicidal bomb that involves deadly force. It could have killed someone. It was just chance that it didn’t.

One attack also makes you afraid, rightly or wrongly, of more physical attacks.

I admire the courage and stamina of the Occupy protesters, who are now heroes standing at the risk of their lives.  Their fight against injustice, which has become very serious and very much despised by some, has not gone unnoticed by the people of America, or the world for that matter.

Anyone who tosses a bomb of any type into a gathering of people is a terrorist. What gets me are the amount of people who post in this forum who either make a joke out of it or even condone it. I understand that the ideology of the protesters may not fall in line with those of the radical right tea party but how can one claim to love The United States of America and her Constitution and then condone attacks on her citizens by terrorist. It wasn’t that long ago that President George W. Bush made the statement that you are either with us in the war on terror or you are against us. It would appear to me that by condoning the bomb attacks against the members of Occupy that the radical right is in fact supporting terrorist.

    Violent attacks are serious. and…yeahh…man…snoozapalooza…

The cold weather is about to smack these dumb az z z z in the pucker pretty soon! I saw one guy at the hundred person smell-in in Boston say he was from Tennessee and the “Weather is just weather! We will still be here!”…uh huh.

You can curl up on my heated porch man. I just bought some poor souls 20 bucks worth of groceries yesterday. But I guarantee you will be dusted off to TN by the time it gets SUB-Zero here in New England. What a fraud. What a fraudulent movement.

Well said, it’s good no one was hurt. We know the Extreme right is already into dirty tricks
mode, no surprise there as we saw O’Keef dressed up like a Wall St exec. strolling through the crowd a week or so ago trying to get a reaction. Count on it to escalate, we’re dealing with the extreme mind.

We should rally around these kinds wrong doings and make the 2012 election a referendum on Extreme Republicans.

I sure hope you feel the same way about people who protest in front of abortion clinics?  They too have had hot items thrown on them and various other objects.  When Mr Terrance Hughes use to stand in front of the student union at the University in Orono students would spit at him and throw objects.  Would you defend people you disagree with the right to protest and DEFEND them when violence is done to them?

  • Anonymous

So why isn’t  this attack being called terrorism ?

At least it’s good to know that the BPD has dealt with young people experimenting with explosive devices before.  And it’s mentioned kind of non-chalantly.  Fun stuff.

I am surprised their stoned minds even registered a blast. Sitting around all doped up, smelling like a garbage bin, and thinking about how awesome a pepperoni pizza would taste after that last hit. Maybe all the acid on the brain made the explosion a zen like experience? Beefing up security? How about you beef up your existence and do something worth while.

Your fellow American citizens are attacked with deadly force for exercising their freedom of speech, and this is what you say?  For shame.

  • Anonymous

I believe that all Americans have the right under our Constitution to protest provided it is done in a lawful manner. The subject matter of what they are protesting either for or against does not matter. As far as your asking if I would defend those with whom I disagree. I most certainly would and the four years I spent as a member of the United States Marines should be more then enough proof of that. I may not agree with what it is you are protesting but I will fight to the death if necessary to make sure you have the right to do so. In fact I took an oath to do just that upon entry into the Corps. I know your feelings on the Vietnam war from previous postings of yours but let me ask you this would you defend the rights of Occupy Maine?

“Beef up security”?!  Do they draw straws each night to see who has to miss out on the Hookah circle and be the watchman?  Freezing temperatures can’t come soon enough for this sorry irrelevant lot.

Was it the extreme right blowing things up during the 60′s? Was Ayers a well dressed businessman on Wall St.? Naw…. pretty sure he wanted to hurt people with bombs… then becomes friends with a future president. These protesters are a nuisance and any serious message they want to get across is lost in their choatic, juvenile, and freakish behavior. Babbling along with mixed messages and incoherent thoughts, anyone who would be compelled to listen will soon be turned away by their bizarre rhetoric and behavior.

  • Anonymous

It was probably just an Etchant bomb which is just a an expanding noise bomb.  To call it a “Chemical explosive” (if that is what it was) would be like calling a cap gun a “hand cannon”. Should you throw them at people? – obviously not, but it’s certainly no molotov cocktail, which is what they are implying.

I have to go to city haul to pay my excise taxes once a year for each car the least these kids can do if they want to register is to register two days before the election, is that so much  to ask?

Kind of funny how after the Tea Party rallies ( where they apply and pay for permits), the parks are spotless  after the event, no drunkeness, people destroying public property etc but here you have Flea baggers, urinating, defecating in public, no permits etc

Even Barney Fife could solve this one.

Usually the comments on BDN simply make me roll my eyes at the foolishness spouted (from both sides and many people in between) but the cheap, immature, and ignorant comments that are being made on this article are just awful.  I don’t care if you support the Occupy movement or not, if you think of them as relevant or wackos, or whatever your opinions, they are fellow Americans practicing their right to free speech who had a weapon thrown into their camp that could easily have hurt or killed someone.  To continue throwing insults and using this as a platform to continue bickering is just sad.  These people may simply seem like a handful of words on a page when presented in a news article, but they’re still human beings.  To be apathetic and/or callous towards what could have ended up as murder(s) is simply low and ignorant.

  • Anonymous

So throwing a bomb into a group of people who do not share your ideology is comical. You know what else it is. It is a crime.

  • Anonymous

It is amazing isn’t it? It is no different then the idiots who yelled “let them die” when one of the republican candidates for President was asked what should happen if someone had a life threatening condition and no insurance. And they call themselves Americans. Vote Yes on One

Let see, 191 of the 200 students they(Maine Sec of State) sampled who did same day voter registration(in 2010), failed to follow up(they signed an affidavit when they registered to vote, stating they would change there driver liscence and domocile to maine)  and change their liscnence and car registration over.

They also found 55 of the 200(that the y could best determine, there were probably many more, also were still registered to vote in their old home state.

Of the 500 total random sample, we had 6 illegal aliens registered to vote, again more fraud.  Lets extrapolate that out, 1.5 million people, that would be about 1200 illegal aliens registered to vote.

As I said if the Attorney General actually went out and looked for the fraud they would find it.  ACORN would be proud of the libtards in this state and how they thumb their nose at voter integrity in Maine :)

Don’t listen to Fox or Rush but can now see what kind of  person is teaching our kids. I don’t like what you say. You must listen to Rush. Nice open mind lump everyone together.

If they have allowed themselves to be bought out by the rich then we need a new kind of politician. Crooked people will always try to corrupt others, whether they have money or not. We need to start casting our votes differently if that you’re suggesting is true.

Or are you, do you really think that I would post that even if I believed it without a very obnoxious note of sarcasm? technically the hamburgaler is a terrorist.

Hey Washco! ( down below), look here – Now see, this is a troll comment, begging to be replied to with a relevant comment by using a hateful, anger-inciting comment that is a lie, thus begging to be corrected. I’ll bite: Of course we all know that the liberal democrats are in fact famous for stomping on freedom of speech with things like the fairness doctrine, and by striving to stifle religious freedom of speech by not allowing crosses to be shown where they don’t like, whilst the republicans have not pursued anything that treads on freedom of speech. I was just saying that the OWS people need to go home not because I want to stifle their freedom of speech, but because they are universally wrong, incorrect, flawed, failed, communist, loser, lazy, dirtbags that need to get a life and take responsibility for their own financial situation and stop whining about things not being “fair”.  Here’s a newsflash: Life’s not fair, and they should be glad they are Americans and only have to worry about such trivial things in life. Try living in Russia, Somalia, or anywhere in Africa or South America and then get back to me. And get an extra sugar in your Starbucks caramel-Macchiato for me or have a few more twists put into your dreadlocks before the next time you go out and yell & scream about not being as rich as people who tried harder and positioned themselves to be rich while you expected the government to take care of you.  Thank God there are lots of ”rich” conservative people who donate lots of money to charity to take care of the poor since the liberals don’t give that much: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/03/conservatives_more_liberal_giv.html

Did you read the latest,  Fleabaggers pulling knives and threatening their fellow Fleabaggers, who would of thought such a peaceful group would carry weapons let alone threaten each other.
