CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy’s 2022 Commencement will be held in Castine on Saturday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m. in the Alexander Field House.
The college is planning for an in-person, ticketed event, and looks forward to welcoming friends and family to campus for this milestone event. MMA’s health and safety protocols will be upheld, and in accordance with current guidelines, masking throughout the event is anticipated. For those who are unable to attend, the college will also sponsor a livestream broadcast of the ceremony.
Commencement activities will begin at 9 a.m. with the annual awards program in Delano Auditorium in Leavitt Hall. Commencement Exercises will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Alexander Field House and doors will open at 11 a.m. A formal commissioning ceremony for new officers in the Navy and Marine Corps will take place following the event.
In addition to being a celebration of the academic accomplishments of members of the Class of 2022, this year’s ceremony will mark the end of President Brennan’s 13-year tenure at the academy. Prior to his appointment at MMA, he served as assistant secretary of commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, deputy assistant secretary of Commerce for International Affairs, acting director of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources.
Dr. Brennan will present diplomas. Dr. Keith Williamson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will preside at the exercises. The oath of office will be administered to new U.S. Merchant Marine officers by Capt. Amy E. Florentino, USCG commander, Sector Northern New England.
