A Norway woman died on Saturday afternoon after she was thrown from her snowmobile and then struck by another snowmobile.
Gracie Herrick Onofrio, 52, was riding a snowmobile on Pennessweewassee Lake, also known as Norway Lake, in Norway when it hit a snowbank on a plowed road, causing the vehicle to go airborne and throwing Onofrio from the snowmobile, according to Lt. Daniel Menard of the Maine Warden Service.
A second snowmobile in her party struck Onofrio, who died at the scene, Menard said.
It was the fourth snowmobile fatality of the season, and the crash remains under investigation, Menard said.
The Norway Police Department, Norway Fire Department and PACE ambulance assisted at the scene.
It was the first of two snowmobile crashes over the weekend, Menard said. A Massachusetts man died after a snowmobile crash on Thompson Lake in Poland late Saturday night. It was the fifth fatality of the season.
