Pregnant woman dies in Maine snowmobile crash

A pregnant Massachusetts woman died Saturday morning after a snowmobile crash in Greenwood.

Elizabeth Abelson, 30, of Gloucester, Massachusetts, was riding a 2019 Ski-Doo Grand Touring snowmobile with her husband, Stuart Abelson, on a trail near Irish Neighborhood Road about 11 a.m. when she lost control of the snowmobile, was ejected and struck trees, according to Cpl. John MacDonald, spokesman for the Maine Warden Service.

Elizabeth Abelson, who was due in early March, died at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, MacDonald said.

She was wearing a helmet.

Greenwood is in Oxford County.

Her husband, Stuart Abelson, is the chief executive officer of Ora Inc., an ophthalmology research company based in Andover, Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of (confirm the) the passing of Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Abelson,” the company said in a Saturday night statement, according to the Globe. “The family appreciates your respect and distance as they grieve Betsy’s passing and cherish the memories they made and the life she lived.”

Bethel Fire & Rescue, Greenwood Fire Department, PACE Ambulance and Oxford County Sheriff’s Office assisted the warden service.

Game wardens continue to investigate the fatal crash.
