A man from Andover died Thursday in a snowmobile crash in Rumford, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Gregory Simmons, 47, died when he was thrown from his snowmobile after apparently losing control of it on Interconnecting Trail System 84, Maine Warden Cpl. John MacDonald wrote in a news release.

Game wardens believe Simmons was riding home after dinner at a local restaurant, the Knotty Moose, MacDonald said. A passing snowmobiler found Simmons and reported the crash Thursday night.

Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, MacDonald said, which marks the second snowmobile fatality in Maine this season. Simmons was wearing a helmet.
