The controversy surrounding Scarborough’s high school principal and other issues continues to energize community members, including the group pushing for the recall of three board of education members.
The political action committee Road to Renewal spent hours Saturday collecting signatures to remove Chairwoman Donna Beeley and members Cari Lyford and Jodi Shea for “incompetence.”
The group wants the board members recalled, Superintendent Julie Kukenberger to resign and Scarborough High School Principal David Creech to be allowed to withdraw his resignation.
“Our kids love him, they rally behind him and if there’s anything we can do we’re gonna fight,” said Sarah Sandler, a parent of students in Scarborough.
Creech resigned last month but after a protest showing support the principal asked to rescind the resignation, a move the school board did not allow.
“For the past two years, the board of education and specifically Julie Kukenberger have been acting in the exact opposite way from what the public thinks is right,” Paul Johnson of the Road to Renewal PAC said.
Beeley responded with a statement earlier in the week, calling criticism of the board and Kukenberger “frustrating.”
“The general public is only able to hear one side of the story due to confidentiality required in dealing with personnel matters in a a school district,” she said, adding board members work “countless hours in numerous committees with one goal of making the best decisions possible in the best interest of students.”
“The board of education members are not listening to us, and neither is the superintendent,” Sadler said. “She’s not listening to our teachers or our beloved principal from the high school.”
If the petition drive is successful, a special election for the three board seats would be held. The current board members can run in the special election.
