The Wiscasset community is remembering a young girl who was killed more than a week ago.

On Dec. 8, police say Kendall Chick, 4, was killed by her grandfather’s girlfriend. Wednesday night, several members of the Wiscasset community came out to honor and remember her.

Hundreds showed up in freezing temperatures, just five days before Christmas, to say goodbye.

Personnel who responded the day of her death, friends and strangers lit candles and released Disney balloons to honor the girl, who loved Minnie Mouse.

Bonnie Lane worked at a store Kendall and her family frequently visited. She was among the few who actually knew the toddler.

“I just took one look at her, and I just couldn’t take my eyes off of her,” Lane said. “She was always happy. She would always smile.”

Police say 43-year-old Shawna Gatto has been charged with the murder of Kendall Chick she remains behind bars and is being held without bail.
