State police arrested a Wiscasset woman Thursday evening and charged her with murder in connection with the death of a 4-year-old at her home on Friday.
Detectives arrested Shawna Gatto, 43, of Wiscasset at her home just before 6 p.m., according to a news release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office determined the child, Kendall Chick, died as a result of blunt-force injury to the abdomen. After meeting with staff at the medical examiner’s office and the attorney general’s office, state police charged Gatto with murder, a Class A offense.
Chick had been living with Gatto and the child’s grandfather for nearly two years, according to McCausland.
Gatto is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. Her initial court date has not been set.
A conviction of murder in Maine is punishable by 25 years to life in prison.
