The body found last week in the Rockport woods was that of a Lewiston man who disappeared in May after police identified him as a suspect in the sexual assault of a minor, authorities said.

Kevin C. Mitchell, 45, was reported missing to police by his wife on May 2. It wasn’t until last week that a hunter found his body in the woods about 500 yards off Mt. Pleasant Road.

A state medical examiner confirmed Wednesday the body was Mitchell’s, police said.

At the time he was reported missing in May, Mitchell had just been issued warrants for four felony counts of gross sexual assault and unwanted sexual contact with a girl under the age of 15, according to Lewiston Lt. David St. Pierre.

Police had been trying to find and question him at the time of his disappearance, St. Pierre said.

Mitchell’s car was found in Union by a Knox County sheriff’s deputy the evening of May 2, he said.

Local authorities are still investigating his death, Camden Detective Curt Andrick said. He declined to describe the condition of the body but said information will help police determine how long the body was lying where it was found.
