The missing 23-year-old Hope man police have been searching for since the weekend was reportedly seen with two people on Kettle Cove beach Sunday afternoon in Cape Elizabeth.

Avery Smith, who has been missing since Saturday evening, is believed to have been seen by a couple around 3:45 p.m. Sunday on the Cape Elizabeth beach, Knox County Sheriff’s Department Det. Dwight Burtis said Wednesday morning.

Smith and what looked like two friends, the couple reported to the Knox Co. Sheriff’s Department, were taking pictures together, swimming and appeared to be having a good time, Burtis said.

Smith’s whereabouts are still not known, and police are still asking for the public’s help in locating him.

He was reported missing around 8 p.m. on Sept. 23 by his family, who said they had not seen or heard from Smith in at least a day. His car was found a few hours later near the beach where he is believed to have been seen the following day.

Smith is 6’1, 230 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He is believed to have ties to Rockland, Cape Elizabeth and Peaks Island.
