Prosecutors say a Jay man murdered his girlfriend while she slept.
The suspect, James “Ted” Sweeney, 56, made his first court appearance Thursday, and investigators revealed what allegedly happened in that home.
The medical examiner ruled Wendy Douglass’ death a homicide as a result of blunt force head trauma.
Prosecutors say they found a wooden baseball bat, covered in blood, inside the couple’s home.
Close friends say the couple seemed happy, and Jay police say they’d never been called to the home, but prosecutor Lisa Marchese says the couple had a history.
“As is so common in cases of domestic violence, Miss Douglass was contemplating leaving him,” Marchese said. “We all know leaving can be the most dangerous time. And he was losing control and killed her.”
Sweeney turned himself in Tuesday morning at the Androscoggin County Jail.
According to court papers, Sweeney presented a note.
“I’m going to jail cause I hurt my girlfriend. Please check Wendy Douglass at 5 Jewell St. Jay. I did wrong.”
Documents also say detectives found a note on a door.
“Wendy I love you. You ruin my love. I already know you cheat on me. You lie lie lie a lot. Ted”
Prosecutors say while Sweeney did not confess to the murder, the two notes indicate he admitted to the crime.
Sweeney remains held without bail. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
