PORTLAND, Maine — The second phase of the Casco Bay ferry terminal renovation project will move forward with the addition of $2.56 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced the funding, awarded through the department’s Passenger Ferry Grant Program.

Casco Bay Lines is a year-round ferry service from Portland to Peaks, Long, Chebeague, Great Diamond and other islands in Casco Bay.

Phase II of the project will enhance the safety and manageability of the terminal, which is outdated and serving more than double the number of individuals it was originally designed to handle, according to a news release from the senators. The renovations will help streamline passenger, vehicular and freight movements and improve the vessel maintenance areas for Casco Bay Lines’ fleet.

“Casco Bay Lines serves approximately one million passengers each year and is a critical link for residents and visitors traveling between the Casco Bay islands and the mainland,” the senators said in a joint statement. “The ferry terminal renovation project will help Casco Bay Lines continue to provide reliable ferry service as well as alleviate congestion, increase efficiency, and improve passengers’ experience.”
