ENFIELD, Maine — The Lincoln Lakes region’s third dollar-discount store will open off Route 2 in the first week of September, officials said Wednesday.
PM Construction Inc. of Saco began building a 9,100-square-foot storefront for Dollar General, a privately held store chain based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, in late March, said Erick Aitken, the construction site superintendent.
“It’s nothing but a plus. I think it will draw more people to town,” said Nels Kramer, a biologist at Enfield Fish Hatchery and member of the Enfield Planning Board. “We have lost two convenience stores in town recently and this helps [redress the loss]. I like shopping at dollar stores.”
The store, which is located at the Route 155-Route 2 intersection, joins a Dollar Tree and a Family Dollar on West Broadway in Lincoln. Two Family Dollar stores also opened in East Millinocket and Millinocket last year. Both are on Route 11.
“It’s going well,” Aitken said. “The building has been erected and the sitework needs to be completed. We’re going to turn it over to them by the end of August.”
According to its website, Dollar General operates 12,483 stores in 43 states, including 1,300 store locations employing more than 11,250 people in Texas. Dollar General has five stores in Maine — in Buxton, Eliot, Lyman, North Berwick and North Waterboro.
PM has built 15 Dollar General stores in Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. It employed about 40 construction workers on the Enfield site. The company will begin building two more stores, in Eddington and Pembrook, next month, Aitken said.
