BRUNSWICK, Maine — The 71-year-old driver of a car that struck a Brunswick legislator earlier this month triggered a three-car crash on Friday that pinned a Durham woman between two vehicles, injuring her legs.

Gary Babine of Brunswick was parallel parking his 1999 Ford at 1:43 p.m. when he struck a parked 2016 Toyota SUV, which then rolled forward and struck a 2010 Toyota SUV, Brunswick police Cmdr. Marc Hagan said.

Jennifer McCausland, 38, of Durham was standing behind that third SUV taking something from the trunk and was pinned between the second and third vehicle, he said.

Brunswick rescue staff took McCausland to Mid Coast Hospital, where she was treated and then released, according to a spokesman.

Exactly two weeks earlier, Babine was driving the same 1999 Ford when he struck Rep. Mattie Daughtry on her bicycle on Federal Street, not far from Park Row.

Daughtry, a Democrat who represents a portion of Brunswick, was traveling north on her Raleigh Cross bike the afternoon of May 6 when Babine pulled out of Green Street, turned left and hit her, Hagan said at the time.

Daughtry, who was wearing a helmet, told the Bangor Daily News that the impact of the collision propelled her over the hood of the car. She landed on the ground and did not seek immediate medical treatment.

She later had a friend drive her to the hospital, but she was reluctant to speak about specific injuries.

Babine was issued a criminal summons for failure to yield at a stop sign, Hagan said at the time. No criminal charges were issued on Friday.
