The Green Bay Packers have hired former St. Louis Rams running backs coach Ben Sirmans, according to reports.
Sirmans, who played football at the University of Maine and served as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at UMaine from 1996-99, will take over as running backs coach after the Packers dismissed Sam Gash from that role.
Sirmans was a running back at the University of Maine under current Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. In Sirmans’ senior season in 1992, he ran for 1,214 yards, receiving conference and New England honors.
Sirmans spent the last four years as the running backs coach with the Rams. He coached running backs at Boston College and Michigan State, spending 16 seasons in the college ranks, before moving to the NFL.
FOX Sports reported that Packers head coach Mike McCarthy also hired Brian Angelichio, the Cleveland Browns’ former tight ends coach, to replace Jerry Fontenot.
McCarthy fired Gash and Fontenot last Tuesday in the fallout from the Packers’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs.
