You can drink a sports drink, eat a breakfast sandwich, take vitamins, chug water and drink a gallon of coffee — you’ll probably still have a hangover. It’s just a part of life.
But Australian scientists say they’ve found a natural way to prevent a hangover from even happening — and you don’t have to buy a tacky convenience store “remedy.”
The secret could be pears — specifically, the juice of the Korean, or Asian, pear.
Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization — that government’s science agency — said it accidentally discovered the hidden benefit of the fruit during research.
It only works if you consume the pears before you drink. They noted that this is only a preliminary finding and would require more research.
“Overall hangover severity, as measured by a 14 item hangover symptom scale, was significantly reduced in the Korean pear group compared to those having a placebo drink, with the most pronounced effect seen on the specific symptom of ‘trouble concentrating’,” said Manny Noakes, the lead researcher.
“In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption.”
The researchers said they’ve only experimented with Asian pears, which you can find locally when they’re in season. The Broadway Hannaford in Bangor said it has them in stock around early winter.
