CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for part of Aroostook County through Saturday night because of a pair of ice jams on the Aroostook River.
The weather service issued the advisory around 2 p.m. Saturday after the ice jams were discovered. One is near Washburn and is causing the water to rise “several feet behind the jam,” according to meteorologist Mark Bloomer.
The other jam is about halfway between Caribou and Fort Fairfield.
No significant flooding has happened yet, Bloomer said, but water is rising in some “low-lying forested areas along the banks.”
“Right now [the river level] seems pretty stable. We’ve been watching the river levels all day,” Bloomer said.
If one of the ice jams breaks loose, it could cause water levels to rise quickly downstream, the weather service cautions.
The flood advisory remains in effect for Presque Isle, Caribou, Ford Fairfield and Washburn until about 10 p.m., according to the weather service.
