RICHMOND, Va. — Senior linebacker Donte Dennis heads a group of five University of Maine football players who were named to the Colonial Athletic Association all-conference teams announced Monday.
The conference’s head coaches voted for the team members and special award winners.
Dennis led the Black Bears with 86 tackles this year and was named to the first team defense. He was joined on the first team by offensive stalwarts junior tight end Justin Perillo and senior offensive lineman Chris Howley.
Named to the second team were senior offensive lineman Josh Spearin and senior cornerback Darlos James.
The special award winners were: Coach of the Year, Andy Talley (Villanova); Offensive Player of the Year, Old Dominion QB Taylor Heinicke; Defensive Player, James Madison LB Stephon Robertson; Special Teams Co-Players, William and Mary punt returner B.W. Webb and
Georgia State kick returner Albert Wilson; Offensive Rookie of the Year, Villanova QB John Robertson; and Defensive Rookie, Delaware LB Jeff Williams.
UM women’s basketball tickets on sale
ORONO, Maine — Tickets are now on sale for the University of Maine women’s basketball game against Rhode Island which will be played at the Portland Expo in Portland at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
Tickets are available by calling 581-BEAR or at GoBlackBearsTickets.com.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for youth, and group tickets are $2 each. All seating is general admission.
Simonds returns to Monks
STANDISH, Maine — The Saint Joseph’s College athletic department is pleased to announce that legendary coach Rick Simonds has been added as an assistant on the men’s basketball coaching staff.
Simonds, a 2010 Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, served as the Monks’ men’s basketball head coach for 23 seasons and posted a 466-176 (.726) record with 11 conference titles and six national tournament appearances.
Monks head coach Rob Sanicola served as an assistant on Simonds’ staff for four seasons (2000-03) and played under him for four seasons (1996-99).
Under Simonds, who garnered 15 Coach of the Year honors before stepping down in 2003, the Monks posted 13 20-win seasons, including five straight from 1995-1999. His wins total is currently 49th among Division III head coaches. Simonds never suffered a losing season.
Returning to Saint Joseph’s also provides Simonds with an opportunity to coach his son, sophomore guard Steve Simonds at the collegiate level.
Bears collecting for Toys for Tots
ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine student-athlete advisory committee will be collecting Toys for Tots once again this year. Black Bear fans are encouraged to bring toys to games for those that are less fortunate.
The toys can be brought to the men’s ice hockey games on Nov. 30 or Dec. 1 and to the men’s basketball game on Dec. 6. In addition, there is a box located in the Bear Necessities store at Alfond Arena if people are interested in dropping off toys at other times.
In addition, the University of Maine athletic department will hold a teddy bear toss on Nov. 30 at the men’s ice hockey game against Vermont. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used stuffed animal to throw out on the ice during the first intermission.
UM women’s soccer team honored
ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine women’s soccer team has been honored with the 2012 Division I National Team Academic Award as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
To qualify for the award, a team must carry an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The women’s soccer team carried a GPA of 3.42 as it represented the America East conference.
Maine finished with a 7-7-3 record (3-3-2 in America East). The Black Bears hosted Stony Brook for a semifinal matchup after finishing second in the regular season. Charlene Achille was named the 2012 America East Rookie of the Year, and Nikki Misener was named to the 2012 America East All-Academic Team.
