PHYLLIS ARLENE SAWYER (WILLIAMS)

BREWER – Phyllis Sawyer, 78, passed away peacefully April 7, 2009, surrounded by family and friends at a Bangor health care facility. Phyllis was born Jan. 27, 1931, in Brewer. She attended Brewer High School and graduated from New Britain High School. Phyllis attended Bates College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in nursing and English. She received a master’s degree in counseling and education from the University of Maine, and was enrolled in a doctorate program there as well. Phyllis had a long career with numerous achievements. She taught high school English at Cape Elizabeth High School, where she also coached girls basketball and dramatics. Phyllis served as an assistant to the director, instructor and student advisor at the University of Maine School of Nursing in 1967. In 1964, Phyllis organized the Maternal and Child Health Council in Bangor and served as the chairperson from 1965 to 1969. Phyllis worked collaboratively with the LaLeche League of Bangor and an ongoing support to new mothers. She was passionate about nutrition and conducted seminars around the country educating parents and expectant mothers on how to nourish their babies and children. She authored two books on the subject, “Nourishing Your Unborn Child,” 1974 and “The Natural Baby Food Cookbook,” 1972. In 1990, Phyllis worked with her longtime colleague, Margaret Kenda to publish a series of books, “Cooking, Science, Geography and Math Wizardry for Kids.” These books were recognized with a Parent’s Choice Award. Phyllis was recognized as an expert in her field of health and nutrition and was included on the Who’s Who of American Women. She was a source of strength for many and was loved by all who knew her. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband and friend, Anthony Williams. She is survived and will be missed tremendously by her mother, Dorris W. Farrar; her sisters, Sandy Drake and Flo Sawyer; children, Wesley Williams and wife, Linda, Jeremy Williams and wife, Sheila, Beth Ntacyo and husband, Micho, and Rowena Griffin and husband, Nick; grandchildren, Blake and wife, Amber, Blaine, Jerel, Darci, Cooper, Darius, Mattea, Joe Tony, Ronan, Kim, Robbie, Heath and Lee; great-grandchild, Christine; and special friends, Cindy, Paula, Terry and Dee. Special thanks to Sylvia Ross Home, Stillwater Healthcare and Community Health and Counseling Services Hospice program for taking such loving care of Phyllis. A service celebrating Phyllis’ life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, at Brewer United Methodist Church, South Main Street. A reception will be immediately after the service at 67 Cottage St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the March of Dimes of Bangor or Camp Campella of Lucerne.
