LINCOLN – Vaughn R. Glidden, 72, passed away Sept. 21, 2005, at a Lincoln hospital, after a brief fight against cancer. He was born, Nov. 16, 1932, in Haynesville, the son of Bernard and Pauline (Smart) Glidden. Vaughn graduated from Howland High School in 1950 and then joined the Air Force where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant while doing military police work. He worked for Bradstreet Ford and Fuel Co. for 18 years, for Worcester Brothers for eight years, and then owned and operated Glidden’s Plumbing and Heating for 22 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary of Lourdes Church where he served as an usher for many years and was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in building the K of C Hall, served as Grand Knight for two terms and was District Deputy for five years, as well as holding many other offices. He was also a member of Horeb Lodge No. 93, AF & AM, and was part of starting the K of C & Masonic Scholarship Fund. He had been a member of the Lions Club, serving as secretary, the American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce. He loved his camper and enjoyed going camping with his special friends, liked to go fishing and enjoyed making furniture and kitchen cabinets. His wife and family were everything to him. Vaughn married the love of his life, Rena, Aug. 9, 1959, and they had two sons that he was very proud of. His sons and grandchildren were the focus of his life. In addition to his wife of 46 years, Rena (Bouchard) Glidden, he is survived by his sons, Stephen V. Glidden, his wife, Holly, and grandkids, Sara and Seth; and son, Jonathan D. Glidden; and granddaughter, Effie. He was very close to his sisters, Betty Ann Glidden Smith and her husband, Richard, of Rochester, N.Y. and Mary Glidden Chamberlain of Howland; sister-in-law, Rosemary Glidden of Howland; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leon and Etheleen Pelletier and Egline Dumais; many nieces and nephews. He loved and enjoyed the company of his nieces and nephews, Larry and Lori Harris and sons, Brad and Brian, Susan and Michael Foster and daughter, Kati, Dawn Chamberlain and Peter Glidden. He also leaves his great friends and camping buddies and his coffee friends at the TimberHouse, Bob McGaw, Jim McLaughlin, Ellery Dow and Karl McGillvray as well as special neighbors, Dale King and family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Brenda Sibley Glidden; a brother, Bernard Glidden Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Gene Chamberlain. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln. A Rosary service will be held 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church, with the Rev. Myles Cyr presiding. Interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Red Cross for the benefit of hurricane victims.
