VEAZIE and BAILEYVILLE Lawrence M. Smith, 77, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at his home, with his family by his side. He was born March 1, 1931, in Calais, son of the late Lewis “Ted” and Gertrude (Hawkes) Smith. Larry graduated from CMHS in 1948. After graduation, he worked for the railroad until 1950. At that time, he entered the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving until 1954. Larry then worked on the paper machines at Georgia Pacific, Baileyville, for 36 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of American Legion, Orono, Post No. 0084. Larry was a volunteer for Eastern Area Agency on Aging where he built ramps for the elderly in need. He was considered an “Active Hero” for the Red Cross as a frequent blood donor. He took great pleasure in good naturedly hurling insults at “P.J.” McVicar and “buggin” his fishing buddy for many years, Dean Perkins. In the last couple of years, Larry developed a friendship with Gordon Williamson, who would stop by to play cribbage or rummy with him. Larry will be remembered as a mild mannered, soft spoken, physically strong man. He is survived by his three children, Larry “J.R.” Smith and his wife, Belinda, of Calais, Jo-Anne Bartlett and her companion, Shane, of Baileyville, and Gary “Garrison” Smith and his wife, Amy, of Champlain, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Mahar of Milltown; two sisters, Frances “Penny” Peasley of Clifton and Shirley Tracey of Sarasota, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, Dianna, Kristie, Desiree, Sarah, Ashleigh, Rebekah, Raycheal, Adam, Brian, Krystal, Melissa, Kevin, Scott, Jesse, Logan, Amber and Jeremiah; five great-grandchildren, Amiyah, Caleb, Riley, Kataryna and Donaven; and nephews, Dale Carlow, Lon, Chris and Mark Tracey. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Ann Caswell of Calais. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Mahar) Smith, in 2003. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Richard McLaughlin officiating. Committal will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date.
