This year’s boys’ Class C South regional finals was a rematch of last year. Except this year had a different outcome.

Top-seeded Winthrop handily defeated third-seeded defending Class C South boys’ champions Hall-Dale 61-41 for the regional crown at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday night.

Winthrop’s record improves to 20-1. The Ramblers will go on to face the winner of tonight’s C North regional finals game between No. 4 Houlton (17-4) vs. No. 3 George Stevens Academy (18-3).

The state championship game will take place on Saturday, March 2 at 8:45 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

When Winthrop and Hall-Dale faced each other in the regional finals last year, Hall-Dale prevailed, winning 51-37.

Winthrop defeated No. 9 Dirigo 67-51 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis, where the team steamrolled No. 5 Traip Academy 68-25.

The Hall-Dale Bulldogs bested No. 6 Monmouth Academy 83-57 in the quarterfinals before upsetting No. 2 Waynflete 65-58 in the semifinals.

The Hall-Dale Bulldogs reached the state title game in 2018 and lost by five to George Stevens Academy, 64-59.
