KANSAS CITY — Kansas City Chiefs starting defensive end Mike DeVito, a former University of Maine standout, suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans and is likely lost for the season.

Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid confirmed that DeVito and three-time Pro Bowl inside linebacker Derrick Johnson are both likely out for the season with torn Achilles tendons.

DeVito, 30, is in his second year of a three-year, $12.66 million contract with the Chiefs.

The 6-foot-3, 305-pounder signed as a free agent with the Chiefs in March 2013 after spending the first six years of his professional career with the New York Jets.

DeVito was a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection at UMaine in 2005 and 2006 and earned first-team honors as a senior, when he served as a team captain.

In 2007, he signed with the Jets as a free agent. He had registered 230 career tackles, including 2.5 sacks, and had forced six fumbles entering Sunday’s game.

The Titans won Sunday’s game 26-10.
