Bangor Cadets capture Junior Legion state crown

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Jesse Colford pitched seven scoreless innings Sunday afternoon as the Bangor Cadets registered a 1-0 victory over South Portland in the championship game of the Junior American Legion baseball state tournament at The Ballpark.

Nick Cowperthwaite provided the Cadets with their only run of the contest with an RBI double to score Joey More in the first inning. Cowperthwaite was named the tourney MVP and was recognized as an all-tournament outfielder and pitcher.

Jake Ireland, Gary Farnham, Tanner Goodine, Moir and Colford also garnered all-tourney honors.

Bangor went 3-0 in the event and allowed only two runs in three games.

Coastal LL eliminated

THOROFARE, New Jersey — Walt Vickery pitched 6 2/3 innings of three-hit ball and struck out 10 to propel West Deptford, New Jersey, to a 4-2 victory over Coastal Little League of Blue Hill on Saturday in the Senior League Eastern Regional tournament.

Coastal, which dropped a 4-2 decision to Franklin Township, New Jersey, in Friday’s first-round game, was eliminated with Saturday’s loss.

Eric Ainsley recorded the final out for West Deptford, which received an RBI single from Vickery and a run-scoring hit from Ryan Baglivio.

Ethan Shepard belted a solo home run and a single to pace Coastal, which also got a single from Garrison Looke.

On Friday, Franklin Township scored three runs in the first two innings and made them stand up. In a two-run second inning, two walks and a passed ball helped the New Jersey entry capitalize on one hit in the inning.

Brian Groot went the first four innings on the mound, allowing two hits and an unearned run with five strikeouts, to pick up the win.

Will Ricker paced Coastal with an RBI double and Nick Bagley added a double among only five hits. Bagley also pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings, allowing one run with four strikeouts and two walks, in relief of starter and losing pitcher Hunter Cote.

Blue Hill trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth when Dakota Chipman worked a one-out walk, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Ricker’s double to left. However, Coastal had two runners picked off by different pitchers in the inning.

Skowhegan 8, Marlboro 6

At Skowhegan on Sunday, the hosts scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to post the eventual winning runs in a winners’ bracket victory over Marlboro, Massachusetts.

Starter Cam Louder picked up the pitching win and provided two hits. Chance Towle hit a two-run homer and a double, Kyle Kruse stroked a double and two singles and Hansen Towle doubled twice for 2-0 Skowhegan.

Austin Stone doubled and singled for 1-1 Marlboro, while Tyler Dossas and Kyle Carroll each added two singles.

At Skowhegan on Sunday, Drew Blackwell fired a four-hit shutout to carry Riverside, Massachusetts to a winners’ bracket victory over Andy Valley.

Zachary Dorso cranked a home run and two singles and Tom McAndrews hit a home run for the 2-0 winners.

Brady Downing, Josh hPower, Trevor Swanbeck and Nick Oufiero singled for 1-1 Andy Valley.

At Skowhegan, Jimmy Reed’s single highlighted a three-run sixth inning that lifted Skowhegan to victory in the Cal Ripken 11-under regional tournament on Saturday.

Reed and Kyle Kruse each hit two singles for the 1-0n winners to support relief winner Cam Louder.

Hunter Keller belted a grand slam in the fifth inning to lead 0-1 Oxford, Connecticut.
