Great Maine Bike Swap set Sunday
ORONO — The Great Maine Bike Swap will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the University of Maine’s New Balance Student Recreation and Fitness Center.
Admission is $3, with free admission for students at UMaine, the University of Southern Maine, the University of New England and Southern Maine Community College as well as children 12 or younger.
Those wanting to sell bicycles should register the bikes online at bikemaine.org/swap and then drop them off at the New Balance Student Recreation and Fitness Center between 6 and 8 p.m. on Saturday or 8 and 10 a.m. on the day of the swap. A 15 percent commission on bike sales will support the coalition’s work to improve bicycling in Maine.
Eight players commit to UMaine women’s soccer team
University of Maine head women’s soccer coach Scott Atherley announced the signing of eight student-athletes for the 2014 fall season. The incoming class of 2018, hailing from four states and two Canadian Provinces, brings experience and accomplishments at the club, high school, and international level.
UMaine soccer’s newest members are Abby Maker (Naples), Emma Lindblad (Russell, Ontario), Kaitlin Saulter (Hermon), Kendra Ridley (Ottawa, Ontario), Marie-Pier Gougeon (Laval, Quebec), Rachel Preble (Safety Harbor, Fla.), Genaya Loftis (Waterford, Conn.), and Amy Falkin (Roswell, Ga.).
“This group is a great compliment to our returning core of experienced players. The addition of these women makes our team as deep as we have ever been. Our training sessions should be quite competitive come August 6,” Atherley said.
Wild’s Rupp suspended for four games
Forward Mike Rupp of the Minnesota Wild has been suspended for four games without pay for a late illegal check to the head of forward T.J. Oshie of St. Louis on Thursday night, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced on Friday.
The suspension includes the Wild’s final regular-season game and the first three games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Rupp was assessed a match penalty for attempt to injure for the incident, and based on
his average annual salary, he will forfeit $7,692.31. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Former Hawks star Hudson dies
Former St. Louis and Atlanta Hawks star guard-forward Lou Hudson died Friday. He was 69.
Hudson was hospitalized in Atlanta after having a stroke in March. He also suffered a stroke in 2005 and campaigned for the “Power to End Stroke” organization.
Hudson, who was nicknamed “Sweet Lou,” averaged 20.2 points per game during his 13-year NBA career. The six-time All-Star spent the first 11 years of his career with the Hawks and finished with the Los Angeles Lakers. He retired in 1979.
The Hawks retired Hudson’s No. 23 jersey. He is one of just three Hawks, joined by Bob Pettit and Dominique Wilkins, to receive that honor.
Maple Leafs hire Hall-of-Famer Shanahan
Brendan Shanahan was hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ new president and alternative governor, the team announced Friday.
Shanahan, 45, formerly the NHL’s director of player safety, begins his new duties immediately. He will be introduced by the team in a press conference Monday.
The Maple Leafs will miss the playoffs for the eighth time in the past nine seasons. They were eliminated from contention on Tuesday after losing 3-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto finishes the season at the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
In 21 seasons on the ice as a Hall of Fame winger, Shanahan scored 656 goals, accumulated 2,489 penalty minutes and won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings. He is the only player in NHL history with more than 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in a career. He also won gold medals with Team Canada at the 1994 World Championships, the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 1991 Canada Cup. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year.
