BANGOR, Maine — Organizers of the American Folk Festival, held each August since 2002 on the Bangor waterfront, announced Thursday a new fundraiser and the city’s first color run.
The event, called Color Bangor, will be held Saturday, April 26, and is modeled after similar events that mix color, running and walking, and have taken place throughout Maine and the country, including “The Color Run” and “Color Me Rad.”
“We have seen color runs in a number of cities in Maine, and it was surprising to me that we have not yet seen one in Bangor,” Heather McCarthy, American Folk Festival executive director said in the news release announcing the event. “These runs are enormously popular, extremely fun and rooted in an long-established Hindu and Indian tradition called the Holi or Festival of Colors. That tradition makes it an even better tie-in with the cultural experience the American Folk Festival brings to the Bangor Waterfront every summer.”
Registration is $40 if you register before April 4, and $50 after. All proceeds will benefit the American Folk Festival.
This August marks the 13th year for the annual festival, which brings together musicians, artists, craftsmen and food vendors for a weekend of multicultural entertainment.
Color Bangor participants will start the route, which will incorporate the Bangor waterfront, wearing a white Color Bangor T-shirt. At each kilometer mark, a variety of colors will be launched onto runners, resulting in a colorful display on the runners’ shirts and themselves as they cross the finish line. The “colors” are non-toxic colored corn starch, FDA approved and safe to use in this manner.
“This is not a road race that will be comprised of only serious runners,” McCarthy said. “The main objective for Color Bangor is ‘fun.’ People who have done this type of run in the past travel for hours to find them. We are happy to say that the Bangor Waterfront will be an amazing location for this event, and we are enthusiastically deep into planning what will be a really fun day.”

All proceeds will go toward the the weekend-long festival, which is free, although a $10 donation per person per day is encouraged to sustain the event.
