Garage reduced to rubble after suspicious fire in Winslow

By Alex Barber, BDN Staff

WINSLOW, Maine — Several fire crews were able to douse a suspicious fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire crews from Winslow, Vassalboro, China, Waterville, Oakland and Fairfield responded to a fire that started at 450 South Reynolds Road at 3:04 p.m., according to Winslow Fire Chief David LaFountain.

The State Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause of the fire.

“It’s a vacant house. There’s no logical cause for a fire to start [there],” said LaFountain. “Witnesses reported a car coming, stopping quickly just before the fire and then leaving quickly as well.”

When fire crews arrived, the garage was on fire as well as a car and a popup camper.

“The garage was totally involved, spreading to one side of an unoccupied home,” he said.

The garage is now “a pile of rubble.” The car and popup camper are total losses, he said.

Fire crews were able to stop the fire from getting into the home.

A message left with the Winslow Police Department was not immediately returned on Wednesday evening. Sidney Fire Department covered Winslow’s station.
