AUGUSTA, Maine — A Kennebec County grand jury has indicted a registered sex offender from Monmouth on a sex crime.

Carroll Edwin Cooper Jr., 52, was indicted last week on a felony count of possession of sexually explicit materials.

According to the indictment, Cooper is charged with intentionally and knowingly transporting, exhibiting, purchasing, possessing or having access to visual images that he knew or should have known depicted a person under the age of 12 years engaged in sexually explicit conduct on April 3, 2012, in Monmouth.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Kennebec County Superior Court on Aug. 13.

In 1998, Cooper was convicted in Kennebec County of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact against a child under the age of 14 years. He is a lifetime registrant of the Maine Sex Offender Registry.
