HERMON, Maine — Construction is expected to begin this summer on an $8 million facility that will be leased to FedEx for use as a package distribution center, according to town officials.
The 85,000-square-foot building will be located on a 12-acre site on Mack Lane in the Cold Brook Business Park, Hermon Town Manager Roger Raymond and Economic Development Director Ron Harriman confirmed Friday.
“They want to start construction this summer and be in the building by next June,” Harriman said. “We’re hopeful that this facility will employ 90 to 100 people,” he said, adding that the number of potential jobs is a preliminary number.
A spokesman for FedEx Ground declined to confirm the company’s plans on Friday.
“FedEx Ground continuously evaluates opportunities that can enhance our ability to serve our customers but, as a matter of policy, we don’t have further information on specific proposals under consideration,” spokesman David Westrick said.
The applicant for the project is Michael Prezzato of Michigan-based Moltus Building Group and the developer is Westmoreland Co. Inc. of Alabama, according to documents filed with the town of Hermon. Plymouth Engineering of Maine was tapped to work on the plans for the facility.
Harriman said that discussions about the facility began several months ago, when a site selection consultant from Texas inquired about available building sites. One of the reasons the Cold Brook Business Park parcel, owned by Dysarts Realty Inc., was selected is that it already had undergone site division approval, which expedited the development process.
“It’s a huge investment, so we’re really excited about this,” Harriman said.
“This is really big news, not just for Hermon but for the whole region,” Harriman said. “The dollars generated by this project will boost the entire region and all of the businesses that are in the vicinity. They’re all in hopes that they will get a little piece of the action.”
The FedEx facility is one of the largest commercial construction projects to occur in the region in recent years, Harriman said.
“The typical new business that is built in one of our business or industrial parks is under 10,000 square feet, “ Harriman said when asked to put the project’s size into perspective. “Eighty-five thousand square feet is two acres of building.”
Additional details about the project are expected to be released next week, Harriman said.
FedEx currently has two facilities in Bangor, one of which is a FedEx Ship Center located at 124 Banair Road and the other a FedEx Freight Center at 54 Godsoe Road.
