HOULTON – Hilda Tidd Maher, 93, died May 1, 2013, in Houlton. She was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Hodgdon, the daughter of Uberto V. and Sylvia (Alward) Tidd.
Hilda graduated from Hodgdon High School in 1938. She earned her teacher’s certificate from Aroostook State Teachers College, Presque Isle, and her bachelor’s degree from Ricker College, Houlton. Her teaching career began in one room schools in East Hodgdon and Ludlow, and she later taught in Littleton and Houlton schools until her retirement. She also worked with her husband, Bernard S. Maher, at Houlton Shopper, and Rod and Gun Shop. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and was happiest when surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Bernard S. Maher Sr. of Houlton; daughter, Donna M. Maher of Houlton; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen S. Maher and Bruce A. Frame of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren, James Fitch of Rochester, N.Y., Kimberly Hartford of Houlton, Michael Hartford of Portland, Sheri Quint of Portland and Christina Maher of Houlton; three great-grandchildren, Brittany and Sarah Sirois, both of Houlton, and Ashley Nall of Portland; and two great-great-grandchildren, Lucas and Savannah. She was predeceased by her parents; son, Bernard S. Maher Jr.; and brother, Merle H. Tidd.
Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Monday, May 6, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St., Houlton, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Gogan officiating.
