JONESPORT – An invitation was sent, accepted and responded to a very long time ago and Herbert Leon Smith, a lifetime resident of West Jonesport, quietly accepted the keys to his new home on the morning of April 6, 2013. Herbert first arrived at the home of Raymond O. and A. Louise (Woodward) Smith April 10, 1943.

As a young boy, he overcame the complications of an accident and began his 65 year fishing career. He graduated from Jonesport High School in 1961 and a year later married his wife of 50 years, Linda M. (Briggs) Smith. Herbert was known for his quick wit and dry humor with a twist of sarcasm. While perceived as a reserved man, he knew how to pull a good prank. He has received his reward for being a faithful, unselfish servant, his honesty, and being a man of his word. He was a faithful member of Jonesport United Pentecostal Church and served as a board member for several years. He served many years as a Moosabec Community School Distric trustee board member. He was a partner in the family business, Smith’s Lobster. He and Linda provided adult foster care services in their home for many years and opened their home to the “3/4 Group” meetings on a monthly basis. In addition to his career, Herbert enjoyed hunting, ice fishing trips, snowmobiling, gardening, reminiscing and tending the new spring chickens. Over the past few years, he enjoyed spending time at his camp in Northfield and fishing on Long Lake and most especially spending huggable moments with the great-grandchildren.

He was welcomed to his eternal home by his parents; son, Dwayne A. Smith; grandchild, Cameron I. Farris; and many other loved ones. His change of address leaves a void in the lives of his wife; daughters, Tonia and husband, Milton Merchant, Wanita Smith and Julie and husband, Shane Farris, all of Jonesport; grandchildren, David and wife, Kaitlin Merchant, M. Mathew Merchant, Luke and companion, Danielle, Jodi Smith, Joanna and husband, Ryan Geel and S. Cameron Farris; and great-grandchildren, Uriah Merchant, Heather and Logan Smith, Emery Merchant and Caleb Geel. Also, feeling his absence will be his siblings, William and wife, Ruth Smith, Ralph and wife, Joyce Smith, Jean and husband, William Lee Guptill and the Rev. David and wife, Donna Smith; his church family; and dear friends and fellow fishermen.

The family invites friends to visit with them 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at their home at 48 Herb’s Highway, Jonesport. A celebration of Herbert’s life will be held on his birthday, 1 p.m. April 10, at United Pentecostal Church, Lamson Lane, Jonesport. Burial will follow at the family plot in Wescogus Cemetery, Addison. In lieu of flowers, one may contribute in Herbert’s memory to an important cause of their choice. Condolences and memories may be shared with the Smith family by visiting their Book of Memories at www.mcclurefamilyfuneral.com.
