Three UMaine men’s hockey players turn pro

ORONO, Maine — Three University of Maine men’s hockey seniors have signed pro contracts and will play in the East Coast Hockey League, according to Black Bears coach Tim Whitehead.

Center Kyle Beattie, who had 7 & 6 in 26 games during an injury-marred (three concussions) season, and defenseman Mark Nemec (2 & 2 in 38 games) signed with the Orlando Solar Bears. Defenseman Mike Cornell (3 & 7 in 38 games) signed with the Florida Everblades.

Whitehead said Beattie was expected to play Wednesday night while Nemec and Cornell will play this weekend.

He also said senior right wing Joey Diamond (14 & 10 in 33 games) is likely to land a contract with an American Hockey League or ECHL team any day.

Whitehead said the players are in good academic standing and will finish their degrees this semester.
