FORT FAIRFIELD – Gregory D. Helstrom, 58, passed away Sunday evening, March 17, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 26, 1954, in Caribou, son of Edward M. and Elouise F. (Giggey) Helstrom.
He attended Fort Fairfield schools and was a communicant of Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield. Greg was employed as a foreman with the Town of Fort Fairfield Highway Department where he operated heavy equipment for more than 25 years. He was a loving and dedicated father, grandfather, son and brother. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, and was an avid NASCAR and Red Sox fan.
Mr. Helstrom was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan G. and Christine Helstrom of Fort Fairfield; three brothers, Gary E. Helstrom, Galen H. Helstrom and wife, Marilyn, Gene R. Helstrom and wife, Patti; one sister, Gail Wortman and husband, Gailen; two grandchildren, Eric J. and Jack S. Helstrom, all of Fort Fairfield; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his former wife and friends, Edith Helstrom and companion, Bruce Dorr, both of Fort Fairfield.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 22, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie, celebrant. Interment will take place later in the spring at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held immediately after the funeral Mass at Knights of Columbus Hall, Council No. 1753, 260 Main St., Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Helstrom to Shriners Hospital for Children, Burn Care Unit, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
