Laura E. Shorey

BURLINGTON – Laura E. Shorey, 102, died March 13, 2013, at a Lincoln health care facility. She was born April 7, 1910, in Burlington, daughter of Harry and Flossie (Miles) Shorey.

Laura spent nearly all her life in Burlington, with the exception of eight years in Bangor and Freeport. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1928 with high honors. She then moved back to the Shorey homestead, where she worked with her parents at their moccasin shop. In 1931, Laura and her parents established a farm, raising livestock and selling vegetables and dairy products and they also boarded workers from Diamond Match Mill. Laura was involved in other ventures throughout the years, including bookkeeping for area lumber contractors. She served as first selectman and tax collector in Burlington and tax collector in Grand Falls. She was an active member of Burlington Congregational Church, now Burlington Bible Church. She owned and operated a country store for more than 40 years. She enjoyed writing poetry and working on family genealogy. She devoted time, energy and love to her nieces and nephews, who affectionately called her “Aunt Chub.”

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Janet Shorey; nieces, Joan Nessin, Sylvia Shorey and Lois Norris; and nephews, Gilbert Shorey and wife, Patricia, Vinal Shorey and wife, Carmie, and Arnold Shorey Jr. She was predeceased by brothers, Eugene, Maynard and Arnold Shorey; nieces, Jeanette Bradbury and Lorraine Curtis; and nephews, Carleton Shorey and Galen Shorey.

Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Fennel and the Rev. Keith Shorey officiating. Spring interment will be at Mount Repose Cemetery, Burlington. Those who wish may donate in Laura’s memory to Burlington Bible Church. Donations may be left at the funeral home.
