BANGOR – Richard Stanley Hewes, 82, died March 12, 2013, at a Bangor health care center. He was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Bangor, son of Herbert Randall and Hazel G. (Hopkins) Hewes.
Richard was a graduate of Bangor High School, class of 1948, and received a Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree in education from the University of Maine. He was a well known and respected guidance counselor for many years. Richard was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of First United Methodist Church, Brewer, where he had been a member of the choir, a 60-year member of Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10, A.F. & A.M., Bangor, Scottish Rite Bodies, a 32nd degree member of Maine Consistory, Bangor-Brewer Shrine Club and Anah Shriners, where he was a former captain of the Horse Patrol.
Surviving are one brother, Edward A. Hewes and his wife, Connie, of Bangor; two nephews, Richard A. Hewes of Bangor and Randall E. Hewes of Hermon; great-nieces, Megan A. Hewes and Melanie T. Hewes, both of Hermon; and two cousins, Joan Smith and Jean Kief, both Bar Harbor.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Tracy Reeve, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Brewer, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot at Oak Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
