George A. Higgins


BANGOR and HAMPDEN – George A. Higgins, 92, husband of the late Leatrice (Daggett) Higgins, died March 10, 2013, at his home in Hampden. He was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Milo, the son of Charles and Effie (Perham) Higgins.
George was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 14th Infantry Battalion in Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of sergeant and, in addition to the Combat Infantry Badge and Presidential Unit Citation; he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. George worked for Eastern Fine Paper, Brewer, for 40 years. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and James Williams American Legion Post No.12, Bangor, where he was Past Commander.
George is survived by a daughter, Linda Sargent and her husband, Charles, of Bangor; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta Ann; two sisters, Annie Andrews and Effie Morrissey; by a brother, Harold Higgins; and by his mother-in-law, Faye Ashe.
A service honoring George’s life will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where family and friends may visit 2 p.m. Tuesday until the service begins.
