Michael Daniel Smart

MILLINOCKET – Michael Daniel Smart, 73, passed away in the early morning hours of Nov. 21, 2012, surrounded by his family at a Bangor hospital. He sustained massive head trauma as a result of a fall while putting up his much-loved Christmas lights. He was born Aug. 4, 1939, in Millinocket, the son of Frank and Alice (Madore) Smart.
Mike grew up in Millinocket and attended Millinocket schools. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Newfoundland, Greenland and Alaska. Mike worked as a pipefitter for Great Northern Paper Co. until his retirement in 1995. He busied himself since his retirement with various jobs and hobbies within his community, particularly woodworking, especially making Adirondack chairs, for which he was well known. He was a very capable woodworker and was willing to make anything requested.
Mike is survived by his wife, Constance (Stiles), with whom he would have celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary in January; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Mario Morneault of Bangor and Julie and David Oliver of Waterville; his beloved grandchildren, Bronwyn Smart-Libby of Skowhegan, Gwyndolyn Morneault and Sophie Morneault of Orono, Georgeanne Oliver and Joseph Oliver of Waterville, Lee Ann Ellis and her daughters, Jessica and Caitlin, of Bangor, Shannon Morneault and her daughter, Skylar, of New Orleans and Alison Morneault of Boston; and a very special great-granddaughter, whom he adored, Tessa Libby. He is also survived by two sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Dean Tibbitts of Topsham and Ethel and Albion Kelley of Millinocket; one brother and his wife, Frank and Elizabeth Smart of Scarborough; two sisters-in-law, Roxana Trimmer of Gardiner and Kathryn and her husband, David Cyr, of Brewer; two uncles, Gilman “Babe” Madore and Richard Madore of Millinocket; two very special nieces, Marie Vienneau of East Millinocket and Nancy Kelley of Millinocket; many nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends. Mike will be sadly missed by his lifelong friend, Donald “Dicky” Berry. He was predeceased by two children, Michael Jr. and Kellan Marie; and one sister and her husband, Sally and Robert Dishon.
Graveside services with military honors will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Millinocket Cemetery. After the services at the cemetery the family invites friends to gather for conversation and refreshments at their home, 344 Katahdin Ave., Millinocket. Gifts in memory of Michael may be sent to Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
