AUGUSTA, Maine — Official vote recounts have confirmed two more victories for Democrats in tight legislative races.

A recount conducted Monday night confirmed Democrat Catherine Nadeau of Winslow defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Susan Morissette of Winslow by 52 votes in House District 54. Vote totals confirmed by the secretary of state’s office show Nadeau defeated Morissette, who is finishing her first term in the House, 2,248-2,196.

The prerecount tally showed Nadeau leading Morissette 2,176-2,142.

In a second recount, conducted Tuesday, Democratic state Sen. Chris Johnson hung onto a slim lead over Republican challenger Les Fossel of Alna. Final vote totals show Johnson leading Fossel by 171 votes, 10,943-10,772.

The prerecount tally showed Johnson leading Fossel 10,880-10,746, meaning Johnson’s lead grew slightly following the second count.

The secretary of state’s office has conducted 11 recounts out of 14 requested by losing candidates in two state Senate races, 11 state House races and one contest for Piscataquis County commissioner. None of the recounts conducted so far has changed a race’s outcome.

Additional recounts were scheduled for late Tuesday, Nov. 20, and Monday, Nov. 26.
