BIDDEFORD, Maine — Former first daughter and first granddaughter Jenna Bush Hager, now an NBC News correspondent and bestselling author, will deliver a lecture on the power of compassion in Biddeford next month.

Hager will give the University of New England’s 2012 George and Barbara Bush Distinguished Lecture, named in part for grandfather, part-time Kennebunkport resident and 41st U.S. President George H.W. Bush. The talk is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, at the school’s Harold Alfond Forum.

The lecture is titled: “The Power of Compassion and How It Can Change Lives.”

Hager is also the daughter of the 43rd president, George W. Bush.

A graduate of the University of Texas, she left the White House behind in 2006 to travel to Latin America as an intern with the children’s humanitarian organization UNICEF.

“During her journey, she was inspired to write ‘Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope,’ a New York Times bestseller based on the life of a 17-year-old single mother living with HIV and determined to shield her child from the abuse and neglect that riddled her own childhood,” states a lecture announcement issued Monday by the University of New England.

Hager would go on to co-author a children’s book about the importance of reading with her mother, former first lady Laura Bush.

Hager remains active with UNICEF and is a contributing correspondent for NBC News, for whom she shot a segment about Acadia National Park in 2010 and a segment about the widely diverse Portland-based Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus in late 2011.

Seth has nearly a decade of professional journalism experience and writes about the greater Portland region.

  1. A beautiful woman who is perfectly capable of standing on her own two feet.  Good choices lead to good rewards.

    1.  Being born with the most silver of spoons doesn’t hurt. What a stretch to invite her to give a speech named after her family. How much is the new building named after them going to cost?

You need to get over your partisan silliness. Got any opinions on Caroline Kennedy  and her silver spoon?? This is a good kid doing good things.  I don’t know about you but I got in a heck of a lot more trouble in my teen years then this girl could even imagine.

  2. This girl was the poster child for drug and drinking abuse not that long ago.
It is nice to see she got her act together but I find it funny that the tea trolls can look past her abuse and call her a wonderful child at the same time point at another child caught drinking and call her a loser in need of DHS intervention.

    1. give her a break….she was around 19 at the time of a couple of minor incidents.  You have never heard of or known of a college student who tried to use a fake id?  Or drank?  Not that uncommon.

      1. No – I won’t give her a break.
Not that many days ago BDN ran a article about breaking up a collage party.
You tea trolls were in the forums calling every one of those collage students losers and the product of welfare mothers.
I guess it is okay with you that the Bush girls cost taxpayers millions on extra security with the stunts they pulled so they could go out and party.
Every last one of you in here calling this girl a wonderful girl and roll model need to remember this the next time BDN runs a article about collage kids having a party before you jump in and call them losers.
But you won’t – because like normal it is okay for the little conservative to break the rules but not anyone else.

        1. That is the difference. Those welfare folks are buying drugs with MY money. At least MsBush paid for her own. Just like many in Maine who get checks for doing nothing. While others of us work hard ay our taxes and seem to live good lives without any gov check or programs.

          1. Sorry she lived for eight years on MY tax dollars.I could care less about her getting busted for drinking. As I remember the Secret Service was in a lot more hot water over that situation than she was.I think one or more were fired or reassigned over that incident.

        2. I assume you are speaking of “teetotalers”, which I am not.  I did however enjoy a few years of college,  so I can understand  a 19 year old engaging in a few “stunts” and having some lapses in judgment.  I also enjoyed making collages of some of my friends doing crazy things while in college.  Move on.

        1. I can give you a list as long as my arm of left and right leaning people that have had  one or two minor incidents and have moved on to live productive lives. If this were the kid of someone whose politics you agreed with you wouldn’t have a word to say. MOVE ON. And I don’t mean dot org.

  3. There’s an unwritten but widely understood rule among gentlemen concerning comments pertaining to a ladie’s appearance. Under no circumstances can she be any where close to your own daughter’s age-no flexibility on that rule. She must be at least 1/2 your own number of years plus 10 for safety sake. If your wife is to read or overhear your misunderstood and misguided remarks -always say this: Next to my wife she is……..No comment is worth sleeping on the couch or making bad suppers for yourself. Those hungry man dinners are not that good.

    1. This age rule… every time I do the math, it always ends up at 18 or older. I even did the math for when I hit 90 years old, and I keep coming up with 18 or older.

        1. I remember one of them being a rose on her behind, I forget what the other one was. I am sure you can goggle it and find out. They made a big deal out of it when she did it.

          1. I ain’t googlin’ it.  If you’ve got something, produce it, and gimme a link to something reliable.  You have the burden of proof.

  4. Compassion?  Lets see she has a alcohol record.  Her father is a republican -who represents those that want to make all these cuts espicially those that are 17 with HIV and have kids.
Jenna  teach the republican party what compassion is.    You need to teach them greed is not compassion.

        1. And your blaming this young lady for cutting social programs for women with HIV because her dad was the President?  You do realize how  ridiculous that sounds, dont you?

    1. Umm oronowoman,  I know quite a few liberal dems in your neighborhood  who are very greedy and self-serving.

  5. Pres Bush sent American soldiers including from Maine over in Iraq to die in a war, as 20 yearold Jenna Bush and the other sister were boozing it up in a Florida barroom

    1. And we all told him to do that as well as the victims familys from 9/11….we expected nothing less than what occured so you need to move on from your theory.  I dont think any of us thought it would last as long as it did but people need to stop using him as a scapegoat for 9/11 because he did exactly what America told him to do. (just my opinion)

  6. I am thinking that a lot of you Bush haters need to attend this conference because your all sounding like “Adult Bullys” towards this lady that happened to have a father who you didnt/dont like.
Shall we blame all your parents for your “lack” of compassion towards someone who is trying to do right with their life after making their own mistakes.  UNICEF is a big deal and I dont see any of our names in this news article for the wonderful things we are doing . Please, stop the hate!!! There is too much of it in this world already!

  7. Where does it say that they are building a new building named after the Bush family? This is petty BS at its finest.
