BANGOR – George W. Tinker Jr. peacefully passed away Sept. 19, 2012, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Dec. 27, 1926, in Bangor, son of George W. Tinker Sr. and Winifred (Howes) Tinker.
He graduated from Bangor High School in 1945 and immediately entered the military service. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Anah Temple Shrine. George was an avid commercially rated pilot for more than 60 years and flew many thousands of hours all over the U.S. He was extremely proud to be a member of Bangor Hanger of Quiet Birdmen and was named Maine Pilot Of The Year in 1970. George worked at R.B Dunning & Co. for 40 years, retiring as the vice president. He then went to work for F.W. Webb until he retired again when well into his 70s.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Marjorie (Roberts) Tinker; daughter, Kathryn; son, Stuart and wife, Penney; surrogate daughter, Ann (Duffy) Patterson and husband, Nick; grandsons, James H. Tinker of San Diego, Todd Stead and Christopher Stead, both of Bath; two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Roger and Lawrence; and sisters, Alice and Eudola. The family thanks Drs. Toby Atkins, Donald Bebb and Thomas Oppenshaw; Hospice of Eastern Maine; and the entire staff on B Wing at Maine Veterans Home, especially Michael, Jan and Jasmine.
A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at All Souls Church, where he was a member, corner of State Street and Broadway, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Maine Air Museum, P.O. Box 2641, Bangor, ME 04402; or Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
