GARDINER – Sophia Tobias Cusick, 87, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, with her family at her side in her home, after a long illness. She was born April 4, 1925, in Augusta, the daughter of Polish immigrants Anthony and Agnes (Lata) Tobias.
She was educated in Augusta schools and was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1944. After World War II she met and married Howard Cusick of Gardiner. They enjoyed 41 years together, until his death in 1990. She was employed by the Gardiner school system as a kindergarten teacher assistant. She never underestimated the potential of a child and was fondly remembered by many of her students. She had an eye for fashion and flowers, and enjoyed working at Margaret Smith’s and tending her yard and gardens. Sophia was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Church, Gardiner, where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and will be fondly remembered as a lovely, gracious lady by family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband; and brothers, Anthony and Thaddeus Tobias. She is survived by her four children, Susan Farris of Gardiner, Thomas Cusick of Round Pond, Kathleen Cusick of Brewer and Mary Cusick of South Portland; a brother, Edwin Tobias and his wife, Joann; a sister-in-law, Janice Tobias; brother-in-law, Richard Cusick and his wife, Ruth; sister-in-law, Eileen Cusick; three grandchildren, Sean Farris and his wife, Maryann, of Chelsea, Marc Farris and his partner, Kelle Keeley, of Portland and Christopher Cusick Holt of South Portland; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the entire HealthReach Hospice staff of Gardiner, with special thanks to primary caregivers, Deborah Heald and Emily Vigue.
Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Gardiner. Burial with committal prayers will be afterward at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
