ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine was listed among the top 20 party schools in the country, according to a survey conducted in the Princeton Review.
The review annually lists the top 20 party schools and top 20 stone-cold sober schools.
UMaine checked in as the No. 19 party school nationwide, with West Virginia University coming out on top.
The top 20 party schools nationwide are as follows: West Virginia University, University of Iowa, Ohio University, the University of Illinois, the University of Georgia, the University of Florida, the University of California-Santa Barbara, Florida State University, Miami (Ohio) University, Syracuse University, Penn State University, DePauw (Indiana) University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Mississippi, the University of Texas, the University of Maryland, the University of South Carolina, the University of Maine and the University of Tennessee.
For the 15th consecutive year, Brigham Young University was dubbed the nation’s most stone-cold sober school.
The other universities cracking that top 20 are Wheaton (Ill.) College, the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Grove City (Pa.) College, the U.S. Military Academy, City University of New York-Brooklyn, Wesleyan (Ga.) College, Wellesley (Mass.) College, City University of New York-Manhattan, City University of New York-Queens, Franklin Olin College of Engineering (Mass.), Agnes Scott (Ga.) College, Simmons College, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Pepperdine University, Becker College, Cooper Union for the Advancement (N.Y.) and California State University-Stanislaus.

dunbar is right, UMO hasn’t existed for decades. It became UMaine when the system was created. It’s the flagship university of the system so tacking an “at wherever” on isn’t needed.
It has always been the flagship university of the system. ALWAYS.
It became UMaine in 1897. When the system was created, legislature tacked on the “at Orono”, despite UM’s wishes. Fortunately, that only lasted from 67-86 when it was reverted back to the original and rightful name.

Sounds like a sore loser liberal arts major. I got a degree and a good job for nearly the same cost as I would have in-state back home in CT. I’m excited for this review as it (believe it or not) does factor into where kids choose to go to school. And before you go saying we don’t want those kinds of kids, keep in mind that the heaviest drinkers are typically wealthy, intelligent, and athletic (all three have been positively correlated to consumption). The hardest partiers I knew are now making 75k+ just 3 years out.

And at orientation when the assistant directo of first year experience/second year experience was giddy when she could point out to the students that her last name was Beers. The soon to be students were assured that no one expected they would not drink. Rather disheartening.
Some students drink, others don’t. I’d rather higher education professionals be realistic rather than delusional about drinking.
Being realistic is different than encouraging.

Boy I would be real proud of that not!! It seems all this school does it promote drinking and drug use especially the Frat houses that are left alone that allow minors to drink their all the time. And don’t forget the date rape drugs!!
I would just like to say that if that is your view of fraternity life then you are a sadly misinformed individual. While there are certain places that don’t have a very good reputation, I would like to also remind you that fraternity/sorority members only make up 10% of the student population at UMaine but contribute more community service hours and raise more money for charity than any other group, and many also hold leadership roles in other academic organizations. I will grant you that it’s very easy to jump on top of a stereotype and run with it and I can’t speak to your personal experiences, but I will assure you that any true fraternity isn’t a den of sleazy individuals as you’ve just described. As far as being left alone, that’s just not true, in fact it’s much easier for police to watch fraternities because the houses are so obvious. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that fraternities don’t party, because they do. This being said, every fraternity party I’ve ever been audience to has had a number of sober individuals on hand to make sure everything goes on safely, and there are never open source containers that can be tampered with, and many of the fraternities will provide sober drivers to get people home safely. Tell me if there’s any kind of regulation like that at house parties? Do remember, there are at minimum dozens of apartment parties every Friday and Saturday night in the Old Town and Orono area. In the future I’d ask for you to just think a moment before blindly reinforcing a negative stereotype that’s been left on fraternities by our forebears from bygone decades, it’s not quite like Animal House these days.

If heavy drinking and making piles of money are so closely correlated, no wonder we are in such a mess in this country/world. Also, how intelligent is it to drink yourself sick? How athletic (healthy) is it? And if you are abusing your body in this way, how long are you going to be healthy, how long are you going to live and “enjoy” your “wealth”.
Partying and drinking until you get sick are two completely different things. If you think all college students just drink until they vomit every Friday/Saturday night then I’m not sure what college you went to. There are correlations between higher intelligence and risk taking behaviors such as alcohol consumption, as well as drug use. Google it, that stuff is pretty interesting
