MADISON, Maine — A Skowhegan man with less than a month left on his sentence escaped from Somerset County Jail on Monday afternoon, according to the jail administrator.

Skowhegan and Madison police, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police are searching for 20-year-old Dylan Perkins. A K-9 unit was also called in, Allen said.

As of 6 p.m. Monday, police still had not found Perkins, according to Somerset County Det. Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II.

Perkins, a minimum security inmate, was unloading a truck with other inmates when he ran away. He scaled a fence and ran into the woods around 1 p.m.

“We have a truck that comes in and unloads goods to the kitchen,” said Major David Allen, Somerset County Jail administrator. “Given his [minimum security] status, he unloads those trucks. While unloading the trucks he took off on foot.”

Allen said one security guard is responsible for monitoring the inmates. After Perkins ran off, the guard called the escape in.

Perkins “went up and over a 15-foot-[high] fence. The fence is in a nonsecurity area with no razor wire,” said Allen. “He did make it into the woods.”

Allen said they have some good leads but had been unable to find Perkins.

“We had our K-9 unit and state police K-9 out and checking where he reportedly fled and where he was seen,” said Gottardi. “We cleared those areas and had a couple good tracks.”

Gottardi said the K-9 search was called off, but a state police airplane was used.

Perkins was brought in to Somerset County Jail on April 29 after having his probation revoked for eluding a police officer. He was set to be released on July 27.

“Now he’s facing a felony escape charge with up to five years in prison,” said Allen.

Gottardi asked for the public’s assistance in finding Perkins.

“If anyone has any information regarding his location, call 911 or your local police department or our anonymous tip line, 474-0230,” said Gottardi.

He also warned anyone who might help Perkins elude police.

“We’re cautioning people that he is a wanted person and anyone who assists him may face possible charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution,” said Gottardi.

Allen described Perkins as a white male with blond hair and hazel eyes. He’s 5-foot-8 and weighs 150 pounds.

It’s the second incident of inmates leaving their correctional facility on Monday. Two inmates walked out of Charleston Correctional Facility on Monday morning.

    1. Yes, as the author of the article writes: “It’s the second incident of inmates leaving their correctional facility on Monday. Two inmates walked out of Charleston Correctional Facility on Monday morning.”

      Thank you for paraphrasing.

      1. The article says monday morning, but wabi channel 5 states the two left charelston Sunday night!! These media needs to get with it!!

  1. Why would he do this with less than a month to go before release??? Was there some underlying reason???? Maybe this should be looked into.

    1. free food, medical, bedding ,heat, tv them good enough reason for him to go back? where paying for it  and he’s laughing at us.

  2. Less than a month left and this guy bolts. How stupid! Hes going to go back for even longer when they catch him. Hope they dont send him to Charleston! :)

    1.  As opposed to sending him where? Charleston is a pretty easy bid. If I was this kid Id pray for Charleston. Truth is, with an escape (and a brilliant one at that, I might add) on his record he’ll be doing time down south. What a character. A month left… jesus…

      1. Was just trying to be funny since 2 escaped from there as well. Yeah and whats another month?? Hes probably somewhere thinking the same thing now though lol sucks to be him!

  3. I feel like I was lied to by the Shawshank Redemption about how hard it is to break out of prison.

  4. There’s only one real good reason I can think to do something like this.  Maybe he has a relative or loved one who is sick and dying and isn’t expected to make it the entire month he had left to serve.  You aren’t aloud to leave prison to visit  someone who is expected to die, you are only aloud to go to their funeral once they have died.  It’s very sad and I know if that were me, any amount of time tagged onto a sentence would be worth it if it was my last chance to see someone.  This is probably not the case, but if it were the case I could certainly understand why someone would do such a “stupid thing” with so little time left to serve.

    1. Thats not true, you have the option to go to the funeral or to visit before they pass!! You just need to choose which one!!

  5. I hope he’s caught before he commits another crime.
remember, an animal is most dangerous when it is backed into a corner.

This guy is now on the run, I don’t think he’d go back to jail quietly, especially since he’s now a fugitive and he knows what awaits him if he’s caught.

    Be safe everyone!

  6. Does anyone else see a disconnect here? In the Charleston story there was no fence because it is a minimum security facility, in this story it is a minimum security facility with a fence. Are they trying to blind us with BS?

    1. Charleston is a state prison, somerset is just a county jail. County jails hold all classifications, so they have fences. Charleston is for state prisoners with shorter sentences and all inmates have to be minimum classification. A majority of the inmates in county jails are not even sentenced.

  7. Major Allan will beat the hell out of him when they find him just like he and most of the SCJ staff do to most of the inmates. They’re mighty tough when the other person is shackled.
