LEWISTON, Maine — Central Maine Medical Center’s loss is MaineGeneral Medical Center’s gain.
CMMC’s four trauma surgeons are going to work for MaineGeneral in Augusta, doubling that hospital’s staff of surgeons, according to MaineGeneral CEO Chuck Hays. The four doctors had made up CMMC’s entire team of trauma surgeons. Three left earlier this year; the fourth is scheduled to leave this month. They weren’t fired.
It is unclear exactly why the doctors decided to leave Lewiston. Chuck Gill, spokesman for Central Maine Healthcare, CMMC’s parent organization, has said the hospital and surgeons had “a professional disagreement.” On behalf of the doctors, surgeon Carlo Gammaitoni declined to talk about their reasons for leaving.
Gill said CMMC’s trauma center continues to run, staffed with visiting surgeons.
Trauma programs care for the most severely injured emergency patients. Maine has three trauma centers, with one each in Lewiston, Portland and Bangor. Although MaineGeneral is building a $300-plus million hospital in Augusta, it currently has no trauma center. Hays said it has no plans to start one, and state officials say they have received no request from MaineGeneral about implementing such a program. Instead, the four doctors will perform general surgery and will be available for trauma surgeries that can be performed outside of a full trauma program.
“We are very excited about getting into that system,” said Gammaitoni, who had served as director of CMMC’s trauma program. “We’re very excited about the prospects of the new hospital and its location, and their vision that they have. We’re very happy that they’ve included us in their vision.”
The three surgeons who left are Gammaitoni, Anita Praba-Egge and Ian Reight. The doctor slated to leave this month is Kevin Price. Hays said MaineGeneral had been looking to expand its surgical team when the four surgeons approached the hospital about working there.
“They’ve got an excellent reputation for quality and patient satisfaction. We’re thrilled to have them,” Hays said.
He said he had no concerns about hiring four surgeons who left another Maine hospital en masse.
“We certainly have the demand, so we were looking for general surgeons. We’re actually ecstatic to have this group coming to MaineGeneral,” Hays said.
The doctors will all start at MaineGeneral this summer.
CMMC has hired a consultant from Massachusetts General Hospital to oversee trauma program development, educational programs, quality improvement and physician recruitment. It is interviewing trauma surgeon candidates and candidates for trauma program director, a position now temporarily filled by Larry Hopperstead, who founded the program and served as its director for years before Gammaitoni took over.
CMMC is recruiting for that director jointly with Massachusetts General Hospital so that the surgeon will live and work in the Lewiston area but will have joint medical staff privileges at the Massachusetts hospital and may be able to teach at Harvard Medical School.
CMMC’s trauma center verification by the American College of Surgeons — similar to certification — was set to expire June 11. CMMC has asked to put off its reverification.
“At our request, the June survey date is postponed,” Gill wrote in an email. “We are in dialogue with the American College of Surgeons and we anticipate the new survey date to be set within the next six months.”

Have these four surgeons from he Lewiston hospital been replaced?? Although Maine General is lucky to have obtained these surgeons, their exit from Lewiston leaves a huge gap in the services Central Maine Medical Center is able to provide to the community. Whatever caused these professionals to leave all at once needs to be corrected immediately.
It’s lewiston, need they say more?
wonder when there will be a exodus of trauma surgeons from EMMC to head south . EMMC better start worrying
I didn’t read the ‘first draft’ of this article, so it may not have been mentioned yet when you asked your question- but it says in the current draft that traumas are being handled by visiting surgeons. I’m going to assume that it means no, they haven’t been replaced.
Follow the money….
Wasn’t it the Bridgton hospital — managed by CMMC — that also saw an entire department of phsyicians quit recently? Anybody know details?
That is the driving force in medicine today. They probably got a better offer.
“It is unclear why the doctors decided to leave Lewiston”….Why in he// would they STAY in Lewiston????? Can’t blame em…..
Holy cow. This is crazy. I’m planning to get into college and medical school to become a trauma surgeon. Hopefully, the Lewiston trauma center will still be around. I’d be more than happy to work there.
with all the shootings, stabbings and fights lewiston has had recently, i’m almost positive the trauma unit will still be a huge part of the profits at CMMC…
“Profits” unless the patients are covered by MaineCare – in which case, the state pays whenever it can accurately forecast revenue by using common sense instead of a Magic 8 Ball. Otherwise, they’ll pay whenever they feel like it.
When 4 surgeons up and bail, it’s not necessarily caused by arrogant doctors. Someone ought to look at the administrative “team” who could very well be the root cause of this exit.
CMMC is way overdue for a leadership swap out. You could carbon date most of that team. When your entire trauma pod actively seeks relocation, something is not kosher. Hello? Trustees?
Yep.
wonder when there will be a exodus from EMMCs trauma program to head south
Brand new state of the art hospital in augusta,
OR
CMMC located in the dirty armpit of maine. (lewiston)
must be a tough choice eh?
*edited.
EMMC is in bangor, CMMC is in lewiston… at least be correct if your going to run something or someone in to the ground
bangor has its issues too
Do you have some beef with EMMC? This is the third comment you’ve made to this article. Do you work there?
I think it’s more a case of nothing better to do than try to start a fight on the message board. Quite a few troll-seeking comments on other stories too.
no i dont work there. i know they have a trauma team . the guy who heads LifeFlight is there Norman Dinerman. I know EMMC has made some cutbacks . EMMC has a major building project 8 floor addition they need a more modern OR figure it out
Exactly what are we supposed to figure out?
MGH – ‘Man’s Greatest Hospital’ knows all about butting heads with their docs.
It’s usually over money and protecting turf.
These ‘guys’ can do trauma anywhere. They grew up on general surgery.
Maine General hasn’t had a trauma department. From what I’ve heard, trauma cases are always shipped south to Lewiston or Portland.
Probably got tired of living in a town that has gradually turned to a third world hell hole. Thanks US government for sending us thousands of poor uneducated people, en masse, when we couldn’t even hire, and still can’t find jobs for, thousands of working Maine citizens.
Don’t blame the US government… WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT. This would not have happened had it not been for people (many local) bringing the 3rd world to Maine. When you vote, think about this.
I personally have had NO good experiences with Maine General in Augusta! I find them totally UNPROFESSIONAL, thankfully I now live in the Portland area, where I can feel safe when receiving medical care. Maine General has several times misdiagnosed an illness, therefore resulting in transport to MMC! Good luck to all the surgeons from Lewiston, finally possibly Augusta has some fine doctors.
I think alot of these hospitals have misdiagnosis…I know someone who went to the hopital in Southern Maine and they sent her home for Stomach Cramps and she ended up in Portland with an Ectopic Pregnacy and almost died….A Dentist who pulled the wrong tooth…or sending a lady to the Dentist for gum disease when it was sores from the Leukemia going through her body and it was the dentist to call the ambulance….there are alot of stories people just dont hear about. The list goes on and on from hospital to hospital so I dont think anyone is really exempt from that…erspecially in this state.
Sounds to me like the hospital director will be the next one to go, since he just lost an entire department of Doctors.
TThey got tired of dealing with the dirty lew
MaineGeneral, a medical center in name only. No 4 doctors are going to change that. What would be the inducement to go to a place who has room for 4 quiters and just announced 47 layoffs or not filling vacancies ?
Hm, I seem to remember a few weeks ago, an article written on how MaineGeneral was letting 20 or so employees go (don’t remember the number exactly…) and how many people were putting up a stink and blaming LePage and that he is just a job killer. Well, if I had to guess the money to pay those people will go to these 4. Happy? (To all those who complained? Do you think LePage had something to do with this hiring too?!). Wow!
Good time for Lifeflight to move to Portland?
dont think Dinerman will move his fleet to Portland though the headquarters is in Rockport
Its all just a power trip with these Hospital Organizations now…who can collect the most money from the most sources. The Paitents care does not factor anymore in these places…its all about who is in power and how they spread the money around..they probably rarely ever seen a paycheck is the most likely reason and thats because over half of this state is unemployed and cant pay for healthcare and the other half is living the high life and collecting from the tax payers while they get their Tattoos and Piercings and have not worked long before the economy changed…I dont forsee there ever being a solution to the problems this state faces…I only see it getting worse…what a sad prediction..:-(
i recently visited the lewiston facility for the first time and i was shocked, i had expected -unfairly i might add- a dump, after all the negative stereotypes about lewiston, i have to say, this is a beautiful hospital. it is huge and super clean and surprisingly pretty and inviting on the inside, the water/plant pool, skylights and amazing giftstore came as quite a surprise. i cannot speak for the caregivers, but as far as the physical appearance and inviting feel, this hospital has bangor beat hands down………
Hospital politics , still a menace within all communities. The bigger the hospital, the worse it is. More laymen are needed on their committee’s as the hospital executives tend to live in a world not visited by the average joe.
Please explain to us how ‘laymen’ will replace trauma surgeons?
EMMC has 7 critical trauma surgeons 2 more general surgery trauma surgeons and on Trauma surgery PA
