A Maine soldier who survived a 2009 attack in Afghanistan was found stabbed to death in an Olympia, Wash., apartment building late last week.

Police and the Thurston County (Washington) Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday that Pvt. Nathaniel Ollis, 29, who grew up in Harrison, Maine, was the man police found dead in an apartment Friday afternoon of multiple stab wounds.

Ollis lived in various places in Maine during his life, including Mexico, Auburn and Lewiston, in addition to Harrison.

Detectives with Olympia Police Department arrested two men connected with the case Sunday night after a multicounty car chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies that ended in a crash.

Dwight M. Bradsbery and Trey N. Jones, both 20, were charged in connection with the case.

Bradsbery is charged with second-degree murder, residential burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. He is being held at the Thurston County Jail on $1 million bail. Jones was charged with first-degree rendering criminal assistance, residential burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. He is being held on $150,000 bail.

Coroner Gary Warnock reported Ollis died of multiple stab and slash wounds to his head, neck, torso and upper extremities. He was an active duty soldier at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, which is about 17 miles outside Olympia.

The Olympian in Washington reported Monday detectives are still investigating a possible motive for Ollis’ homicide.

The newspaper cited probable cause declarations released by police in support of arresting Bradsbery and Jones.

According to the newspaper, a witness reported to police that she saw one of the suspects assaulting Ollis from behind on Thursday, the day before his body was found. One suspect told an Olympia detective he and others helped clean blood from the crime scene on Friday.

The newspaper reported the man told authorities he masterminded the cleanup effort because he was the smartest one of the group. The same suspect also told detectives he was injecting methamphetamine during Sunday’s police chase.

According to the newspaper, the other suspect admitted to detectives he attacked the victim from behind and stabbed him multiple times with a knife. The man told police he broke the knife during the attack, left the blade in the body and discarded the handle.

Meanwhile, family in Maine are struggling to cope with loss of Ollis — who survived a 2009 explosion in Afghanistan that killed three of his close friends. The Olympian in Washington State reported Monday the 2009 explosion was caused by a bomb that went off outside a village called Omar Zai. Ollis was traveling in a Stryker vehicle.

Ollis’ uncle, Robert Seavey, of Harrison, said the family was very proud of Nathaniel and everything he had accomplished in his life. He said his nephew’s mother was not prepared to talk to the media Monday night. He did add the family thanked the Olympia Police Department and its efforts to make two arrests so quickly.

“He was an artist. He was a musician. He was a father,” said Ollis’ wife, Callie, of Leeds. “He was beautiful. He had so many friends. He just made friends so easily.”

Callie Ollis said her husband was just weeks away from being discharged from the Army, but did not live on base. Like so many soldiers returning from war in the Middle East, she said he had struggled since being injured in the 2009 attack. According to The Olympian, Nathaniel Ollis suffered shattered heels but still managed to attend funeral services for those soldiers killed in the attack just days later.

Ollis said the couple hadn’t seen one another in more than a year, but remained in regular contact via phone.

She wants more than anything to remember the days when she and her husband loaded their three sleeping children into the car at 3:30 a.m. — determined for their kids to awake to sunrise on the beach.

“He had this empathy thing going on,” Callie Ollis said. “He just knew what you were feeling.”

  1. How cruel.  I apologize to you Nathaniel for such wrong done by fellow human beings to you who deserved nothing but gratitude.  Please be in peace now.  Family, I offer respect to you for your sorrow.

  2. To serve our country overseas in a dangerous environment and survive, then come home only to be senselessly killed by someone her on your own soil. What this poor young man went through. Rest in Peace Soldier!

    1. Come on BDN, where are the photos of the urban “yutes” who killed this wonderful young Mainer?

      Not politically correct?

Are you afraid your readers will finally realize  that inner city America is more dangerous than Afghanistan?

The government we have grows weeds and cuts down the roses.

He survived Afghanistan, but he did not survive modern-day, tolerant, multicultural America.

Let us all work towards a government which separates these devils out from among us!

Long live Maine! Long live America!

      1. I couldn’t help but notice that the American soldier that went on a killing rampage in Afghanistan a few days ago came from the same base–Lewis McChord.  Now there are 4500 from there being re-deployed to Afghanistan next week only to be hunted by the Taliban for revenge.

        Crazy…….

  3. War is a manifestation of death and destruction. It is an exhibit of all the negativities of life. A war is the result of the lack of peace and ends in leaving no one happy. Wars deeply impact all the nations involved in it. They affect the nations’ economy and the life of its citizens. If a war can severely impact the countries at war, it surely has a grave impact on those who are on the forefront during the times of war.It is sure to severely affect the true warriors, the soldiers who stake their lives to guard their motherland. Wars not only affect the soldiers’ life but also result in serious emotional effects on the soldiers of war. Wars stir their emotions; they affect their lives and impact their states of mind.

Now with all that said, here is one man, one young man, that had made a scarfice to protect the innocent of a war strighten land and survive. Now he returns to his ‘safe’ motherland only to be stabbed in the back. Does anybody stomach have a twist in it? Some things I just can’t fathom…

  4. Compare the quality of this young man, to the “people” who killed him.

They run loose, while he will rest beneath the soil of Maine.

We ought to immediately close our borders, declare Maine an independent nation, and issue passports to the outsiders.

Believe me, if we don’t, this sort of thing will soon be on our doorstep.

I ought to know, I lived three blocks from Harlem.

    1. This and your other post are disturbing. If you have some information on a racial angle to this murder, why don’t you come out and just say it, instead of hiding behind code words such as “multicultural” and “Harlem”? As for the special status of Maine as a haven of innocence, seems to me that we’ve had some rather heinous murders right here in the last few months/weeks.

      1. Right and Camden looks like South Central L.A. and Ellsworth is as dangerous as Detroit. That’s what the Left wants us to believe, and that’s why our people continue to die.

Maine is a Haven for Innocence compared to those places, but not for long perhaps, because of attitudes likes these.

          1. I know the type of perp quite well…you don’t have to be from the big city to be an “urban yute.”

        1. You said you don’t rely on statistics in one post, but then rely on them in this post….which is it, do we use statistics or not??

The point I think he is trying to make is that we have the same crime here, committed by just as bad people, just not as much of it.

One other question, because I agree with him, are all Muslims terrorists….it would appear so as you so gracefully categorize people.

      2. He was a soldier, an artist, and  a musician.

Once again, “urban youths” kill one of our own, and liberals start whining about “racism.”

        1. I didn’t think I was whining. I just wanted to see where you were coming from. Thanks for the clarification. Now, could you clarify what you mean by “our people” and “our own”? Thanks.

        2. Hey…quit the “Liberal” crap.  This guy was a soldier of American forces and was an American. He had American values and doesn’t deserve someone piggy-backing posts of a political nature for a story that should be in the spirit of observing his service to America.  It wasn’t the left nor the right that killed him…it was a couple of thugs that murdered an American service member.  Neither Rush Limbaugh, Mitch McConnell, Barney Frank nor Bernie Sanders could prevent this tragedy.  Please don’t ride some banal coattail to express your own soapbox opinion.  There is a time a place for political rhetoric….this is neither.

          Thank you!!

        1. No, no, I wasn’t interested in the killers at all, despicable people that they are. I just wanted to try to understand SoB’s post and he clarified his meaning brilliantly.

        2. Pretty sure he was saying that people don’t need to bring race into a situation that isn’t.  The killers aren’t victims, but it also has nothing to do with “shutting down the borders”.  So often we confuse the actual point, and nothing gets solved, resulting in needless arguing and confusion of the issues.

    2. Harlem is one of the lowest crime areas in New York, A fact you should know if you lived there.  New York City itself is not included in the top ten crime prone cities.

      1. Sure Harry, Harlem is real safe…and so is Detroit and South Central L.A.

You ought to go for a stroll on 125th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard at night, but I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Atlantic Avenue in Flatbush would be even better.

Or try Newark or Camden, New Jersey.

        1. Actually I walked all those streets in the 1980’s when crime was up.  There’s a place on 126th Street called Harlem Fried Chicken where I went every Friday night with my foster children. Best dang fried chicken in the world, and I lived in New York City throughout my childhood, walked the Streets at all hours of the day when I was as young as 10, and was NEVER the victim of even a minor crime till I moved to Portland Maine and had my car (with all my mechanics tools) stolen. The most scary experience of my life was walking from Machias to Whiting on a dark cloudy night before there were streetlights.  I guess it is what you are used to which defines your fear.

My opinion is you must watch too much TV!

          1. Sure, sure…a walk from Machias to Whiting is as dangerous as a walk through East New York, Harlem or Detroit at night.

Folks, google the name the name “Brian Watkins” and “Columbus Circle.”

Brian Watkins’s mom and dad took him to see NYC for a graduation present.

Brian never returned home to Utah, because he was surrounded and stabbed by 11 gang members  in the 59th Street and Columbus Avenue subway station IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. He bled to death in the arms of his mother at the age of 17.

Think that was TV? Or was that real life?

And take a guess Harry…were the gang members Norwegian Americans?

          2. You can cherry-pick crimes from any city.  Two Lilly-white people toasted their baby in a microwave oven     (Auburn Maine)  a 12-year-old was dumped on the Side of I-295 he had been raped and killed.(Portland Maine) turns out a white Nebraskan was the doer. He was later executed in that State for similar crimes. A white guy killed his wife and two children up in Dover, two days ago a white guy killed another white guy in Lamoin. Then of course there was Timmy McViegh who killed 164 people including a whole day-care center full of children because he felt his Christian Values were being usurped by the Government. Then there was Charlie Manson, John Gacy, Jeff Dahmar, and a host of other white serial killers (a black serial killer is a rarity) then we have all the little white children who shoot up their schools in places like Kentucky, Washington State, Colorado,  Mississippi, and Wisconsin.

          3. Got it, Harry…Harlem is as safe and problem free as Houlton. New York good, Maine bad. Detroit safe, Machias dangerous. Minorities good, white man bad. Baaaaah…..Baaaaaahh…..BaaaaAHHHHHH.

          4. I have lived in Maine and I have lived in NYC. Here such crimes are rarities. In NYC, they happen everyday. The NY Post put it best when they ran a headline which screamed “NY, CITY OF THE DAMNED.”

          5. That’s the New York Post run by  News Corp owned by Rupert Murdoch who’s son (manager of the company) is going to jail for corruption.

Pardon me if I don’t take their word for anything.

          6. To compare NYC to Maine; to say there is no difference in the quality of life; to say the crime rate in Maine is comparable to the crime rate in NYC; to equate Tim McVeigh with those who uphold Christian values,  what can I say?  You don’t like us much, do you? Now tell the truth, Harry.

          7. Well now I’m really confused. Yesterday I was a racist who hated blacks now I’m anti white.

          8. Some people can’t tell the difference between Harlem and Houlton.

Marla HansonFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaMarla Hanson (born c. 1961) is a screenwriter and ex-model.Born in Independence, Missouri, Hanson attended college in Dallas, Texas. After working selling real estate and insurance, a job promotion brought her to New York City. There, a part-time modeling job eventually became a full-time career in the 1980s.In June 1986, she rejected the sexual advances of her landlord, Steve Roth. Roth hired two friends, Steven Bowman and Darren Norman, to attack Hanson. Hanson testified that Roth asked her to step outside a bar, then stood by while the two men, after announcing a “stick-up,” slashed her face with a razor blade. The assault left three wounds that required surgery and over 100 stitches to close,[1] resulting in permanent scars.

      2. Pardon me if I don’t rely on statistics…I lived there when a 19 year old freshman was shot in the head and killed for $1 on the next street over from where I lived.

    3. Yes, let us close off our borders, trade with nobody, let nothing in….that will help Maine out greatly.  Then we can watch as the rest of the U.S. prospers while we turn into a third world nation, great choice.

  5. That is one sad story… RIP, Soldier!

Ironic that that base has been in the news so much lately.

  6. Now thats what bail should be for crimes like this not 1000.oo or 1500.00 like here in Maine plus a chance to go do it again!!

      1. Sorry about that i should have been clearer…maybe there isnt for murder im not sure but things like molesting and domestic violence and stuff like that these people are gettin out on minimal(sp)? bail and going right back to do it again within a few days!

  7. Have you not heard the latest story about Detroit? They have put ads on TV now telling people what reasons they can call 911 for because the police can’t keep up with all the calls. Sadly, if your home is broken into, you are assulted, you can’t call 911 you have to call a different number and  leave a report and someone will get back to you.

My heart goes out to this young mans family. We lost a brave, loving human being and for what?

    1. Youtube Detroit in ruins… the series tells you alot about what happens to cities run by Liberals..

      1. Detroit was the victim of corporate entities like Ford, General Motors, and other ancillary auto parts companies.  “Liberals” had almost nothing to do with that disaster.  Other cities wooed the corporate backbone out of Detroit with tax incentives, promises of anti-union government assistance, and sometimes outright cash payments. The workers followed the companies, causing home value to plummet. the tax base disintegrated, and Detroit went bankrupt. Like failed States elsewhere lawlessness and deterioration prevailed.

Funny thing though, the suburbs arouynd the City never felt the pain.

        1. Sure, sure,  Harry….it was the evil corporations’ fault and the ’67 riots had nothing to do with it.

Who are we to believe? you or Coleman Young, the first black mayor of Detroit, who said the following:

OK, now that you’ve lost the argument, you can resort to the usual liberal tactic of name-calling.

Coleman Young, Detroit’s first black mayor, wrote in 1994:“The heaviest casualty, however, was the city. Detroit’s losses went a hell of a lot deeper than the immediate toll of lives and buildings. The riot put Detroit on the fast track to economic desolation, mugging the city and making off with incalculable value in jobs, earnings taxes, corporate taxes, retail dollars, sales taxes, mortgages, interest, property taxes, development dollars, investment dollars, tourism dollars, and plain damn money. The money was carried out in the pockets of the businesses and the white people who fled as fast as they could. The white exodus from Detroit had been prodigiously steady prior to the riot, totally twenty-two thousand in 1966, but afterwards it was frantic. In 1967, with less than half the year remaining after the summer explosion—the outward population migration reached sixty-seven thousand. In 1968 the figure hit eighty-thousand, followed by forty-six thousand in 1969.[63]

          1. Mayor Young’s hand-picked Police Chief, close friend and political
advisor William L. Hart, served for 15 years as Chief before being
indicted and convicted for stealing $2.6 million from police undercover funds. The Deputy Chief of Police (Kenneth Weiner), also a close associate of Coleman Young, was charged and convicted in a separate case involving investment fraud. The culmination of the many investigations, indictments and convictions of those around Young led many observers to believe he was at the center of widespread corruption in the city government, which included school boards, sanitation, and many other departments, but especially the police department. Detroit has been unable to lose its reputation as one of the most corrupt cities in America; that perception is frequently attributed to the period coinciding with Young’s long tenure as mayor. However, given close continuing FBI scrutiny extending from his days as a radical left activist, other observers believe that Young had to be clean because any wrongdoing on his part would have been
readily discovered and disclosed by the FBI; the convictions of Weiner plus others were in part based on evidence from wiretaps on Young’s home telephone.

Riots don’t happen in a vacuum.  some spark ignited them.  People who are at work are not the ones typically doing the rioting.

I have no love for “liberals” (actually in truth I haven’t seen a liberal since 1968) but blaming that vague category for every US ill is not getting the problems solved.

Detroit has had a series of crooked Mayors…. maybe that is part of the problem?

          2. Man builds the city; the city does not build  man.  If there were good people in Detroit, they would rebuild the city and build a thriving economy.

The ’67 riots led to white flight, which led to the downfall of Detroit. Currently, there is not one major grocery chain operating within the city.

          3. Clearly, there are not enough to make a good city.  It hardly looks like Paris or Athens, or even Minneapolis, Harry.

  8. You can go to any country and return, but nothing prepares you for the violence in the United States.

  9. “He was an artist. He was a musician

    ..
    ..

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,

    In the ranks of death ye will find him;

His father’s sword he hath girded on,

    And his wild harp slung behind him;

“Land of Song!” said the warrior bard,

“Tho’ all the world betray thee,

One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,

One faithful harp shall praise thee!”

  10. Politicans have deminished the Value of life. and created an enviroment of distruction.. And you swallowed it and allowed it to happen.. Holding our politicans accountable is over.. They own the media and you like shiny things..  Don’t forget that dancing with the stars is on coming back on..

  11. Well, Uncledrinky, I have been around the block enough times to know a hater of our people and our military.

    OK, Uncle Drinky?

    1.   Sorry to step on you SonofBangor but it won’t let me reply to uncle drinky directly. So  drinky, I didn’t know cra-k came in liquid form. Can you qualify your statement about Nate or are you just a Dbag?

      1. Sorry to step on you keek669…this is for Uncle Drinky: Like it says in the movie, “He was a soldier of America — Honor him!”

  12. This young  Mainer put up quite a  fight against these two  holdovers from the Late Stone Age.  I imagine they were much larger and more powerful.

“Multiple stab wounds to the chest, torso, head, and neck…the knife broke off in his back.”But these are the sort of men who settled America and conquered the land. May we all be brave enough to put up such a fight if our time comes.

All honor to you Nate Ollis. We will keep you in sacred memory.

  13.   And the “smartest” one one of the grp was shooting meth during the police chase. I’d let a few of Nathaniel’s comrades have 15 minutes with this d bag and his pardners to let them be all they can be on their POS a–.

  14. We need more people like you msfreeh, eye’s wide open and disreguarding what they want you to think… Thank you for your comments on the BDN and all the research you do to educate people…

  15.  “……the man told authorities he masterminded the cleanup effort because he was the smartest one of the group”  Yup, no doubt.
