GARDINER, Maine — A new report says Maine had the sixth lowest automobile insurance premiums in the nation in 2009, the latest year for which national figures are available.

Maine Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa said Maine moved up from the No. 7 spot from the previous year in the annual report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The report tracks average costs associated with personal automobile insurance nationwide. It says Maine’s average yearly auto insurance premium in 2009 was $682, the lowest figure in New England.
