BANGOR, Maine — They tried to play nice, but it was pretty clear at Saturday’s Penobscot County supercaucus that the Republican candidates vying for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe’s senate seat are not happy with her actions in Washington.

Snowe, a three-term senator and former eight-term U.S. House member, was the first to speak at the political gathering of Republicans from 25 municipalities. They came together at Husson University to elect delegates to the state convention in May and participate in a presidential preference straw poll.

“Regardless of who the nominee is, come 2013 we will have a Republican back in the White House,” Snowe said to get the troops rallied. She added later that, “We must pull out all the stops to ensure President Barack Obama is a one-term president.”

During Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 24, he mentioned reforming the executive branch of government, Snowe said, adding that when she heard him say that, she immediately had her own remedy.

“I thought to myself, ‘That can be arranged — let’s start at the top,’” the 33-year veteran lawmaker told fellow Maine Republicans.

Snowe, who has never lost an election, went on to say that Congress needs to pass a balanced budget, reduce the deficit and fix or repeal the health care law, which she dubbed “Obamacare.”

Her opponents spoke next. Republican candidate Scott D’Amboise of Lisbon Falls said Snowe is not fiscally conservative enough, and a representative for Andrew Ian Dodge of Harpswell said that when Snowe voted to pass the health care law, she clearly supported it.

“Our party needs to return to its conservative roots,” D’Amboise said.

D’Amboise, who lost a Maine congressional election in 2006 and who is a tea party-backed conservative, also questioned how Snowe has voted on major issues.

“I challenge the senator to defend her votes on the stimulus package, food safety and NDAA,” D’Amboise said, referring to the National Defense Authorization Act.

NDAA, the candidate explained, allows the military to go into homes without a warrant.

“They can hold you indefinitely right here on American soil,” D’Amboise said, drawing upset applause from the crowd. “That is wrong.”

State Republican Party rules require that each town hold a caucus to elect delegates to the state convention early each election year. Feb. 11 is this year’s deadline, which also is the date the town-by-town presidential poll results will be announced.

Nearly half of the state’s cities and towns held caucuses on Saturday and Republicans from 16 Piscataquis County towns are scheduled to meet Sunday in Dover-Foxcroft.

After Snowe and her opponents, other state Republican candidates also got an opportunity to address the gathering. Senate President Kevin Raye, R-Perry, who is challenging Democrat Mike Michaud for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District seat, spoke about what he has learned in the 10 years since he last tried to unseat Michaud.

Representatives for the four Republican candidates who hope to face President Barack Obama in the fall — Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Sen. Rick Santorum — also took to the podium.

Former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu addressed the caucus on behalf of Romney.

“I am absolutely convinced that the best candidate to beat Barack Obama is Mitt Romney,” he said just before the caucus began. “When he was governor of Massachusetts, he cut spending, and he cut taxes.”

A Republican change is needed, Sununu said, because, “People are hurting.”

  1. “…we will have a Republican back in the White House,” Yes,  most likely sweeping the floors.

        1. They do support the hard working poor people ,thats why Im a Democrat…Excuse Me, Im a janitor, nurse, caregiver, cook,  buisness manager, secretary, billing clerk, case manager, house keeper, writer, tranportation director, trainer, computer savey, teacher, etc… just to mention a few…..oh and , also Mother, Grandmother  and Best friend as well….. Excuse me Who Are You Again???…

          1. It is because of the Democrats that so many are currently out of work. Supporting them while they sit home is not supporting the working man.

    1. Ha ha, I wonder how all of the democrat janitors liked that comment.  Good one, lets belittle an honest person from making a days pay sweeping the floors.  Do you think before you post?

      1. Why would you consider it an insult to all janitors to say that one of them might be a Republican?

That reflects an incredibly negative view of Republicans on your part!

  2. Here is a woman with vast experience and she has surely done more things right than not.   She is senior, she is a non partisan member of congress which we need, she is smart, moderate, female and this country cannot be governed from the edges.    She is just what we need and let’s hope she stays right where she is.

        1. I have nothing to hide. You and the rest of the world need to wake up and see what is right before your eyes. The government can make you disappear if they want to. You don’t think it can’t and won’t happen ?!?! You really trust your government that much?!?! You are exactly what the governments wants…subserviant sheep that can easily be led to slaughter !

        2. I wonder if that’s what the citizens of Soviet Russia thought before they disappeared.  Speak out against your government – bye bye forever.  It’s here.  Now.  In black and white.  “Indefinite detention without trial”.  Yeah, that’s the American way!

          1. The scary thing is that it was supported by both D’s and R’s. There us really very little difference, it’s all about the money!

          2. The scary thing is that it was supported by both D’s and R’s. There us really very little difference, it’s all about the money!
            ****************************************
IT WASN’T SUPPORTED BY RON PAUL!

          3. I’m with you there!
If Ron Paul is not on thr ballot I am going to write him in, I cannot in good concsience vote for any of the fools presented thus far.

        3. Be careful of what rights you want taken from others because the next rights they take away just might be one of yours.

First they came for the communists,
          and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
          and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
          and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak out because I was Protestant.

          Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

    1. Let’s hope she gets defeated. She is smart, but she looks out for her own best interests, not ours. She is paid for by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Their biggest members are large insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

      1. Chamber of commerce shouldn’t exists. Waste of money and support the tax breaks for all the businesses so the owners get richer and the workers get poor!! The are all for corporate GREED. dissolve this entity

      2. As someone said the other day, too bad we couldn’t get someone under the Bubble who’s gotten a little dirt under their fingernails. during their lives.   The Poster was referring to farmers and fishermen as possible replacements for those luxuriating on taxpayer’s dollars who have to do nothing but say “No.”

The Big Bubble provides total shelter for life for silver spoon millionaires, and a lot of lawyers.   They all make more than $174,000 a year.  Their rent is paid. Their office staff is paid.  They have no worries like the poor workers and the worse than poor people.  Their medical bills are not a worry.  Neither is their retirement and free jet travel home weekends.

What a job.  Another who wishes to take advantage of the Bubble and its fantastic offerings is Romney.   Here’s a silver spoon  multi-millioniare who made a fortune firing workers and bankrupting plants just to make a profit. A Trump -“You’re fired”- endorsement was most appropriate.  He blatantly states her has no concern for the poor.  They have a safety net, he says, as only a millionaire can say it.

    2. we need her and Collins to give all that “agriculture money” to the Pakistanis so they could buy all our hotels, gas stations and restaurants with that grant money and NEVER pay a dime back. That’s what they did in the 80/90’s. Great job! NOT

  3. She has been good for Maine and is a moderate person with the ability to see two sides of an issue and has the gumption to vote her conscience.  Kind of reminds me of M. C. Smith, a Maine icon.  Let’s keep her.

    1. She is nothing like M.C. Smith. Smith had morals. Snowe is bought and paid for by large insurance and pharmaceutical companies. She offers nothing but lip service. Tell them what they want to hear. She may well be gone this term.

    2. Folks just don’t like strong independent women who don’t do as there told .Though I don’t always agree with her position,I think she represents the people of this state with grace and competence that few others could match. She never has or will embarrass us the way some of these other bafoons have embarrassed their respective states.

    1. Thanks to Penguin, we can expect a strong democratic Legislature being elected in November.  Obama has the Presidential election in the bag – the economy is coming back, Iraq is done and Afghanistan is starting to wind up and the best candidate the Republicans could find is a left over from their last nomination process.

      1. Notice that NONE of the GOP candidates/clown squad mention the name…

        George W. Bush

They have thrown him down the Memory Hole – and do not want to remind the electorate what it was like under “conservative” republican rule.

        yessah

        1. Yet if you closely review their policy positions they are George W all over gain.

Let’s have a re-do of W’s disaster isn’t a very good campaign motto, is it?

        2. Bush was not a conservatve. We have not had a true conservative in a very long time.  As a matter of fact Obama and Bush have pretty simikar policies. Just Obama is not as honest  about what he wants.

      2. What has the current president done for this country that would encourage you to have him back in the white house?

        1. It is not what the president has done, it is what the Republicans have done. Like groveling to the top 1% and helping to sell this country to China. That is why they will not get near the White House. People have had it with watching their standard of living slide into the toilet while a very small percentage of “Americans” pile up obscene wealth. If you think that it is a good sign when 6 people in Arkansas have more wealth than 96 million Americans, then by all means, vote Republican. If the thought of it makes you ill, show your displeasure in the voting booth.

          1. As usual, you forget that Obama, a liberal left wing extremist is the president.  The country has gone backward since he has been president but you still prefer him to a republican.  That is the definition of partisan and you fit right in.  Keep being blind to reality.

          2. Blind to reality? lol. American workers have seen their standard of living slide right into the toilet in the last 20 years while the top 1% have seen their wealth explode exponentially. Nope, no problem with the Republican agenda. It is all Obama’s fault! lol.

          3.  Explain yourself, no more empty sound bytes from Fox News. Exactly HOW has the country gone backwards. C’mon entitled, give us some facts and stop blowing smoke.

          4. Average hourly carpenter wage in 1980 = $16.39
Average hourly carpenter wage in 2011 = $20.98    (28% increase)
            A gallon of regular gas in 1980 = $1.25
            A gallon of regular gas in 2011 = $3.67   (193% increase)
            A first class stamp in 1980 = $0.15
            A first class stamp in 2011 = $0.44   (193% increase)
            Median home price in 1980 = $64,000
            Median home price in 2011 = $170,000   (166% increase)

This is one of the reasons why we MUST adopt a commodity-backed currency and purge ourselves of the terrible “inflation tax” that is suffocating the working class. This is why both parents have to work to support a family today. 90% of American’s wages have not kept up with inflation and will continue to not keep up.

Historically, economies using a commodity-backed currency enjoy stable prices ; governments can’t print the excess money that causes inflation and governments without excess money can’t spend themselves into massive debt!

Our current monetary system ultimately benefits only a small percent of our population. Don’t let them fool you into thinking that we must continue this lunacy! Please vote for Ron Paul and restore America.
            http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/business/income-inequality/

          5. The single most realiy based economic policy that would help everyody would be to get the Country back on the Gold Standard, which Nixon took us off of back in the late 60’s. When the economy was based on the gold standard both inflation and debt’s were kept under control by a single value-based commodity that was the basis for EVERYONE’S economy. Once we came off it everybody started to deterine what their country’s currency was worth. Is it a wonder why currency values float like oil in the Gulf after a BP ‘picnic’ ?

        2. President Obama stopped the Bush Great Recession from becoming a great depression, and:  Expanded the SCHIP program to improve the health of children.  Passed the Fair Pay Act to end the immoral pay discrimination against women.  Took the bank middlemen out of student loans to save money and reduce student loan debt.  Passed a politically MODERATE landmark healthcare bill which will SAVE hundreds of billions over the long run, reduces the cost of healthcare, allows people to remain on their parents’ insurance up to age 26, ends immoral  insurance company discrimination, and ends the Bush donut hole in the prescription drug benefit all while setting up new insurance exchanges to reduce costs within the PRIVATE market.
Lowered taxes for 95% of all Americans and small businesses in many ways.  Saved the American auto industry which is now again leading the industry globally.  Instituted the largest investments in alternative energy ever to reduce dependence on foreign oil.  Has passed two trillion dollars in cuts to reduce the debt.  Has overseen 23 straight months of private sector job growth with the largest monthly job gain in years last month, and has overseen a full restoration of the value in our financial markets with all indications that these trends will continue.  Has passed a veterans employment law and has just proposed another.  Has followed through on ending the Iraq War.  Took out Osama Bin Laden and many other Al Qaida leaders.  And this is the short list.  He’ll be re-elected.  Flip Romney is toast.

        3. 23 consecutive months of job growth, unemployment from 10.3 to 8.3%, Osama is dead, and so are 22 of the 25 most notorious terrorists in the world on his watch. Remember Libya? He has also instituted trade agreements (mutually beneficial) with many countries we otherwise would have a deficit with. Need some more?  Okay, what have the Republicans done?? Not one jobs bill in the past two years, a record number of fillibusters, a mandate to obstruct any positive growth for the people of America in order to achieve their primary goal of getting Obama out of office. Totally irrational and destructive, and yet you approve?? And you want this stumblebum with a stick up his butt Mittens to be President? You sir, are insane. Sorry, there are no softer words for you if you can’t see what’s going on. Get informed, stay away from Fox News.

      1. Don’t you mean someone who thinks for herself?  She does what’s best for the majority, not for her party.  She thinks for America, not the repugs alone.  She is a patriot.

        1.  Baloney, she’s voted the party line over 95% of the time. The only time she or Collins don’t is when their votes don’t matter. She knows that most people, Dem or Republican won’t bother to look up her record so she tries to play both sides, but not when it counts.

  4. All republicans care about is getting rid of Obama. Republicans haven’t done ANYTHING except stonewall anything the President tried to do…like his jobs bill. People need to be working to grow our country yet the Repubs hold all of us hostage so they can focus on getting rid of Obama. The pepubs did what ?!?!?! Passed a bill confirming our nations motto ” In god we trust “….HELLO, we knew that already !!!! Oh, they found a place in the white house for the ” bust” that was in the oval office. Thanks for nothing repubs !!!!!!!

    1. well said. They are suckers to our country. They are the main drain to our finances throughout this country. NOT the poor on welfare!!!

    2. Why are they holding anyone hostage? We need to pay for all these bills. There is obviously a limit to the amount of taxes that the Feds can bring in, so there has to be fiscal responsibility shown by someone. Reid held up 2-4 different bills, supported by both Dems and Reps, because he did not like them. As an example, the payroll tax holiday. Do we all realize that there is no one paying into Social Security during this time. Who will make up the difference? I don’t know about you, but we live on a budget. Speaking of budgets, did you know the Democratic lead Congress went over two years without even proposing one? We cannot just give them a blank check.

      1. People and businesses are still paying into SS.

They are paying 8.4%, split evenly by the emploee and employer instead of the normal 12.4%

      2. 100% of the reduction in Social Security payments is being refunded to the SS system from the general fund. They have used SS as a mechanism for the tax cut so that only working people get the benefit.

      3. Ron Paul will fully fund Social Security and Medicare for those who rely on it and he will allow citizens under 25 to opt out of it if they want to. The other candidates want to make cuts to these benefits now and postpone people from receiving them. Ron Paul will be able to do this because he will stop funding nation-building and defending foreign countries that are perfectly capable of defending themselves. We will have a strong defense because he will base the troops at home, which will also help local economies.

OWS tents at night show warriors practicing how to taser and pepper spray war criminals
like Olympia Snow as they apply their own plastic cuffs on her and whisk her off to a waiting plane at the Bangor Airport tarmac where she will be brought to Iraq to stand trial for war cimes committed against humanity on behalf of American oil corporations. This is the newly released OWS training video.

Strong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring
down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based
defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these
techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a
        mere token opposition party.

Change the subject. This technique includes creating and/or reporting a distraction.

  6. Well they better hurry up and get a candidate nominated that has a chance. It sure won’t be Newt or Romney.

      1. too greedy and rich. will just continue to allow the rich to get richer and the working class/middle class to become the unemployed poor class.

        1.  http://occupyportland.org/2012/02/02/f29-training/

too greedy and rich. will just continue to allow the rich to get richer
and the working class/middle class to become the unemployed poor class.

      2.  I just attended my first caucus today and signed up as a delegate for Ron Paul.  It also looks like, from his overwhelming support there, that Ron Paul took the straw poll.  However, the results won’t be divulged until next Saturday.

        1. I hear you but you need to hear this. Until Maine creates a voter fraud proof system
we are just spinning our wheels.
We brought Leonard Gates to speak at Bates college in the early 1990’s
to discuss the voter fraud he was committing in Cincinnati for the FBI  and local police.
          google
          gates draise fbi voter fraud

Gates was a supervisor at Cincinnati Bell Telephone and was charged by the FBI  and company president with inserting new software the FBI  had provided him, into the voting machines

          1. So then really the FBI was prosecuting itself for illegal wiretapping? Was this while Louis Freeh was head of the Bureau, by any chance?

      3. He would have my vote, but with an EVIL son like his, he must be evil as well………………………….. GOP  voters are having trouble choosing the least evil, because the GOP candidates are all EVIL…!!!

  7. Come on Maine Republicans!! Now is your chance to give us a candidate that is truly conservative! We have been waiting a LONG time for a chance to replace this waffly, compromising moderate with someone we can really get behind and get excited about voting for. Let’s get together and get it done finally… vote for D’Amboise! Snowe needs to go retire, she is tired and hunched over anyway.

    1. Dream on Areosmith! Or should I say Dream on BIG “O”  The GOP does not have a canidate worthy of carring Obama’s undies to the laundry let alone running our country. I will be honest I did not vote for Obama, but i will this time around because the alternative is much worse than the known!

      1. there you go!    He even had the audacity to give Osama a friggn religious burial at sea……at sea!!…….how smart was that?  It was brilliant, because he knew of the nomenclature, the religious ritual, he knew enough not to start another war.

No shrine, no tombstone, no nothing…….that was smart.   And if you think  for one minute they could have taken him into custody………no way.  What did they call  that?…..a double tap.     That was merciful.

  8. Them’s fightin’ words.  Looks like she doesn’t care whether she wins next time or not.
Surely she does not really believe Romney can beat Obama.  She must be tired.

    1. Romney can win because he has the FBI  on his side.
No difference between Obama or Romney, as both represent Wall Street vested interests.
for more about FBI  agents committing voter fraud see

Why won’t the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigate
      electronic vote fraud?
Is it because the DOJ and FBI have long been involved in it, themselves?

Call the skeptics names like “conspiracy theorist,” “nut,”
“ranter,” “kook,” “crackpot,” and of course, “rumor monger.” You must
then carefully avoid fair and open debate with any of the people you
          have thus maligned.

      1. Ok, we’ll give you a computer and an internet connection.     You can identify them,   other than that, and until they get it secured, there should be no computer ballots being cast.   I agree with you,  the speak of voter fraud and registration this and ID that,    we are most vunerable over computer ballots.

      2. That might explain how Bush was ‘elected’ – twice!

But how do you explain Clinton and/or Obama?  Your theory doesn’t make sense if, as you suggest,
the same person has been directing the election show for 38 years running, from inside the FBI.

        Sorry, I’m not persuaded.

        Coo, coo, indeed.

  9. Republican politicians are and have not been acting in good faith.  They’re already trying to go back on the deal they made regarding the debt ceiling and the automatic cuts. Why should we trust anything they say now?

  10. Senator Snowe’s statement is laughable– she voted with this president more often than not, so she was definitely setting him up for re-election–she is a RINO through and through.
Voting for the stimlus package and the so-called Affordable Healthcare Act(Obamanoncare) is simply thinking beyond party affiliation? I THINK NOT! She and Susan have given Mainers and Americans an everlasting Nancy Pelosi deal–“we have to pass these over 2000 page bills in order to find out what is in them”–and now we are finding out more of the sorry mess that we are in, piece by piece.

    1.  You are wrong. Look up her voting record. She’s voted the party line over 95% of the time. You are uninformed and apparently too lazy to do your homework. I know it’s easy to sit there and repeat what you hear from conservative radio and t.v., and the rest of your uninformed pals, but please, if you’re going to comment, back it up with facts. Otherwise you’re just running your mouth.

  11. Dream on Areosmith! Or should I say Dream on BIG “O” The GOP does not have a canidate worthy of carring Obama’s undies to the laundry let alone running our country. I will be honest I did not vote for Obama, but i will this time around because the alternative is much worse than the known!

          1. Tea Party and Koch brothers supported Le Page  aided by Charles Summers seek suppression of voters through redistricting, restricting voter registration on election  days, and Voter ID.

Similar radicalism aimed at cutting voter participation is being attempted in other states by tea party Koch brothers-=sponsored governors.

          2.  I must show ID to buy Beer, but not to vote? I must show ID to buy cigs, but not to vote? I must show ID to board a plane, but not to vote? I must have ID when I drive, but not to vote? I must have ID when I hunt, but not to vote? I must provide 2 forms of ID to get a job, but none to vote? Hell, I even have to show ID to prove my credit card is mine at any number of stores, even though the credit card company will remove the charge if it is fraudulent.

I do not know any law abiding citizens that can not provide ID at the poll. Voter ID ends voter fraud. The only reason to not support a voter ID law is to allow the same person to vote multiple times.

          3. Dude, what dont you get about this charade? There are no parties, no sides…The so called democrats and republicans are controlled by the same elite banker corporations!
This pathetic game that the mainstream media is complicit in selling is a joke. It isnt real!!

Divide and conquer. Though you believe you’re free you’ve been conquered.

A nation of weak minded easily duped sheep. Pathetic.

        1. So true.  He took full advantage of the fact that a large percentage of Tea Partiers have little education and are easily influenced. “People before politics,” he said, over and over again.
And as soon as he was sworn in, the truth came out:  “Politics before people.”
He probably even told them to counter any arguments with the word, “elitist.”  Come on, Tpers,
          let ‘er rip.

  12. How can someone who has been at the beck and call of the President all of a sudden pretend that they despise the man?  Oh yeah, it’s an election year.

  13. blah, blah, blah…..what have you done lately Olympia to serve the State of Maine in any positive way?

  14. Wont take much to much to beat 0 Bama. he will have to rely on mud slinging. He sure as heck cant run on his record

    1. When Obama took office, the Gross Domestic Product was crashing at -8.9% and we were losing 818,000 jobs per month.

We were still in Iraq and Osama Bin Laden was still alive.

President Obama and the Democratic Party saved the nation and the world from a Great Depression.

The GOP opposed this and the tea party foolishly and irresponsibly tried to throw the country into economic turmoil by forcing the Treasury to default.

We are now adding 250,000 jobs per month and GDP is growing at +2-3% per quarter.

GM is now the world’s largest car maker and Chrysler is doing well.

      OBL????

      not so much

      Obama 2012

      yessah

    2. He’s too smart to be drawn into the tea pot  stirred by republican acidity.   One by one the tea party pushed republican candidates have been using their bitterness and lies to get rid of their opponents.  They’ve spent millions degrading each other. Still not satisfied, they’re chopping down their last chance – Romney  -who loves p[ink slips and hates the poor.

Can we afford another Bush-Cheney style reign that put this country into a pit?

  15.       On Kevin Raye spoke about what he has learned in the 10 years since he first tried to run for election against Mike Michaud — I’d be more interested in him telling us what he was doing working for a DC, K Street lobbying firm while serving as an elected State Senator.  These guys only look out for themselves and those who can afford to contribute to them.
I don’t always agree with Michaud but I find him attuned to trying to do what’s right for the people of Maine as a whole.  Raye’s been an insider in DC, being paid on the side by an inside special interest lobbying group only because he’s an elected State official and this allows them to “fund” him for their interests, which will be served if he is elected to Congress as well.  So much for the folks from Washington County having an elected representative in Augusta or DC in a Raye candidacy.

    1. And the intrinsic reality is:  Mike isn’t, and never has been a DC insider.   He’s not a lawyer, he’s not a lobbyist he’s an educated paper maker.    He doesn’t own a million dollar house, nor does he want to.

I’ve found myself disagreeing with Mike,  he is stubborn, and that’s what it takes to be an honest legislator.   But Mike will never stab you in the political back.

I’ll always remember my state senator telling me that if you know you have someone in a corner, give them a way out. Because if you don’t, what’s going to happen when the roles are reversed?

Mike is doing what he does best, he listens and he learns. He would be the first person to give a dollar than take one. He is also very passionate about where he is from, and knows that there are two distinct Maine’s. Mike does what we all would do, he represents. That’s all the man has ever done.

Having said that: So CP? what do you think of my idea of having a clear and concise successor to the Governor? My proposal is: to have the electorate vote a Lt. Governor, who also serves as the Secretary of State. When there was not a clear majority in the senate we had 2 senate presidents, which one would have become governor? This person, the Lt. Governor serves the same term as legislators, 2 years. ??? Any thoughts?

Also I would like to have your thoughts on enabling Maine voter’s to recall the governor.
I understand it’s going to be a referendum, but would we need to change the constitution? I don’t want a partisan opinion, I want your thoughts. By the way, I don’t think that it has come to that point, but people ask me the logistics.

      1. Right on on Michaud, he is honest and truly committed to the people.
Lt. Governor, I’m not sure.  Charlie Summers?
Do they run as a team, a vote for the slate, Governor and Lt., or could the voter select them separately?
In reference to the year they were divided 17-17-1, I had believed they should have selected “a” senate president.  But, that was their choice so, so-be-it as it was.  I believed who ever was President at the time there was an opening would have become Governor if such had occurred.
Why two years instead of four as the Governor’s?

        1. No running as a team.  Obviously the governor gets a four year term,  the Lt. Governor gets a 2 year term, as do legislators, so they couldn’t run as a ticket.(or a six year term, nonetheless, they can’t run together)   the only difference is that the Lt. Governor is up for confirmation every two years, which is essentially the current Sec. of State’s term. and two years more accurately reflects voter intent.  And no,  I wouldn’t elect Charlie Summers as Bob Littlefield’s assistant!!

My reasoning is this:  there is a clear and concise successor to the governor in the event that something should happen,  a person that is popularly elected. Our legislators, specifically the senate has demonstrated that it cannot conclude as to whom would have been a successor.   It would allow that person tenure and exposure that is necessary for the duties, while also providing an independent and accountable post to the voters of the state, that is somewhat devoid, after an election, of legislative politics.  Without any doubt one of our senator’s could pass, and it is well within a governor’s decision to appoint him or her self to that position,

I wouldn’t want Keven Raye as governor no more than I would want Charlie Summers,  my plan at least involves voter imput and impartiality.

You didn’t give me any info on the recall?  I understand that it isn’t politcally correct or viable,  I do know that it’s going to take a constitutional amendment,   but I do think that this state should at least take a look at it.   I also think that we should have taken a look at it long ago….

And obviously, if there were a recall of the executive, the Lt. Governor would assume duties until a special election could take place……there is a trace of logic behind my maddness. A sitting governor would always know that there is someone who is more than willing to take their place, perhaps, he or she would demonstrate a little more of a conciliatory attitude?

          1. I’m not sure I’d agree w/the two year term if they run as a team. In your second paragraph, last sentence you state, “it is well within a governor’s decision to appoint him or her self to that position”,  I don’t understand what you are referring to.  Governor’s do not appoint the Secretary of State, if you’re talking about selecting a Lt. Gov, why not have individuals run for it just as one runs for Gov., that way they are selected by the people, not the candidate? I believe that is how most States do it.

          2. In the event of a US senate vacancy, due to death, sickness,  appointment or running and winning the Presidency,   a governor appoints the individual to that seat. They have and are able to appoint themselves.

My reasoning behind not allowing the two to run together is simple.  Any governor, such as the one we have now,  can disrupt the electability of his or her running mate.  My goal is to have the two separated and independent of each other.  Sort of a checks and balance thing.  If we were to recall a governor,  why would we want someone who mirrors their philosophy  as acting governor?  And I’ve never really cared how other states do things,  though the argument says that this is what is done,  an equal analysis can conclude that this is what you shouldn’t do.

          3. Then each position should run independently of each other, the voter can decide if they want both individuals from the same party or separate, but I’d support a four year term, not a two.

I now know you’re reference on the appointment was in reference to Senate seats. I have no problem with having appointed US Senator’s having to run in the next general election that is more than …., say, 120 days from the date a vacancy occurring.  That would prevent a governor from “playing games” delaying an appointment to give someone an extra two years by delaying the naming.  Maybe, you could require the legislature to confirm an appointment since the legislature  use to elect US Senator and the legislature is more representative of “the people” as a whole.

          1. Well said, he said so at a graduation in Millinocket few years ago. Then people cheered him after the speech. How did that work out for Millinocket?

          2. He wasn’t and hadn’t worked for the mill for years when the mill closed.   Your state representative today,  Herbie Clark used to work for the mill.    Almost everyone in the Nockets at one time or another either worked, or had a family member who worked there.  The unions had nothing to do with the mill closing,  if you remember correctly, the union tried it’s damnedest to make concessions to keep it open.

Where was the mill’s bailout…….Mr Bush Jr??.      Guess the Nockets aren’t that important after all,  well at least not to him.

          3. He was just an irrational Union Stooge, nothing more. He caused the strikes etc and got them closed.

He has done nothing for Maine and should be booted.  He votes lock step with Obama.

          4. “Free” trade got the mills closed, not Mike Michaud. But, it is your fantasy, make it as big as you like.

          5. Yuppers you can thank Bill Clinton, Michauds hero for getting NAFTA passed and the US into the WTO !

You can also thank the Union thuggery in the plants.

          6. Clinton did sign onto NAFTA, but I believe the WTO was Reagan/ Bush. They all had a hand in iit on both sides of the aisle. Union thuggery? Is there anyone else looking out for the interests of the working men and women of America? The Republicans? Lol.

            ——————————

    2.  Mike does what’s right for Mike. The only bacon he’s ever brought home is from Maryanne’s Market. He’s number than a bag of hammers but bright enough to stay out of the limelight and quietly collect his $175,000 a year with free health care and full retirement after 3 terms while the rest of his region scrapes enough money together to buy a gallon of gas.

  16. Now, if we could just have a Republican as a U. S. Senator from Maine!  She comes around once, what every six years or so and proclaims her “love” for Republicans and their principles, then she gets re-elected and becomes a Democrat again.  It’s time for a real change.

  17. For Snowe to be correct, apparently there must be a ROBthePUBLICan who hasn’t announced his candidacy yet…

  18. What would she know about a Republican in the White House? If anything, she seems to be doing her best to prevent that from happening. If we’re lucky, we’ll hopefully have two real Republican Senators from Maine in the Congress also. And not the two RiNO’s!

  19. Well sure,… the White House tours do not discriminate on the basis of  race, sex, religion, or ideology .

  20. time for the rich GOP’s to depart from DC. How about if you make over 125, 000 you can’t run for a government position!!! That is just giving the rich folks a place to continue to DRAIN off the working class and give their companies all the tax breaks etc. Continue to steal from the working/middle class making us all POOR and unemployed!!

    1. Although I completely agree that we should take the money out of politics, I do not think $125,000 a year is rich. A married couple each making about $60,000 would make about that much together.

      1. I don’t consider that rich either, that’s why I would vote for someone like that. I don’t want a rich person in politics because they don’t understand the working class and they are there just to make themselves even richer. I just pulled that figure out of a hat. I’m so done with RICH/GREEDY politics

  21. In spite of the actions of not conservatives but extremists, i.e. McConnell and company, we have not had a 2nd great depression, we still have the auto industry, and the economy by most measures is improving. At this point the Republican candidates have been making a great case for Obama’s relection.

  22. Mrs. Snow if you would pay attention to the Obama family for one second you just might learn some ethics.  The clock is ticking on your term.  Tick Tick Tick Tock !!  Hope you enjoy retirement.

    Respectfully,

    Maine Voter

  23. You can listen to the newbies,  but you go with what you know.   There is a difference between “not being conservative enough”  and being pragmatic.   It’s not about ideology,   it’s about representing.

Having said that,   I’m not about to vote either.   But I will say this as a democrat,   I have voted for Ms. Snowe, and Mr. Cohen,   and the reason being is because they best represented our interest. Anyone, in my opinion, votes their wallet…..they, at the time were the best choices for mine.

That’s what it is about.   It’s not about Tea Party politics or being moderate or conservative;  a progressive or a liberal,   it’s about representing,   and her offices do it very well.

I disagree that there will be a republican in office, I can’t see a candidate that is strong enough. Romney has lost 2 primary’s, and he is being attacked by his own party, relentlessly. What’s happening is the party (republicans) are split, that’s a sign of weakness.

  24. Voting is like driving a car. If you want to go forward vote (D). If you want to go backwards, vote (R).

  25. That might explain how Bush was ‘elected’ – twice!

But how do you explain Clinton and/or Obama?  Your theory doesn’t make sense if, as you suggest,
the same person has been running the election show for 38 years, running from inside the FBI.

    Sorry, I’m not persuaded.

    Coo, coo, indeed.

  26. “We will have a republican back in the White House.”   I hope you are wrong.   We need some compassionate humans there.

  27. Senator Snowe is caught between a rock and a hard place.  She has won because she has been a moderate.  This year she has gone too far to the right.  Even if she wins the primary, she will lose the general election because independents will no longer be able to vote for her.

  28. Is Snowe a Republican? She panders to both sides and is part of our problem in DC.
Please remember this lady has been there for the whole time Congress has so mismanaged the USA. They should all be charged for derelict of duty. Jeez, 33 years!

  29. Why all the secrecy? Lack of confidence ? No transparency for you ! The results sealed is confusing.

  30.   Being an Independant and watching a moderate Republican surccumb to the pressures of the radical right is disheartiening.  Its like watching a homo sapien transgressing into a neandrethal’, t makes one want to forgoe his independance and take sides.

    .

  31. This from the woman who’s single vote allowed Obamacare to continue through commitee. We will remember that Ms. Snowe.

  32. Snowe needs to be thrown out of office.  She stands for war and the law of war which is no law at all, National Defense Authorization Act. 33 years   in office is enough, she voted for the bankers, for the wars, for the loss of freedom, for the demise of this country.  I pray she is voted out.  I also Pray that Doctor Ron Paul is the candidate for President, he is a righteous man.

  33. What a snow job, she was the one on the comittee who could of killed Obama care by simply not supporting it, instead she pull her “bi-partisan crap”, voted for it and allowed it to move out of committe.

She is the worlds biggest Rino and needs to get the heave ho!

    1. People forget this VERY IMPORTANT FACT my friend.
Also, never forget she supported that crook Timmy Boy, you know, the treasury secratery. She needs to be sent packing. Let her retire in DC. Has anyone noticed, most of these people who “love the great people and state of Maine” can’t wait to get out of it once they retire?

  34. All I see here are a bunch of people all crying and whining about how bad things are. No where do I see anyone putting any type of concrete improvement out as a alternative or option. The GOP, and even the conservative Democrat’s, had better learn REAL QUICK that when you open your mouth you had better have something more than air in your hand when the times comes to produce. As much stink as Oly makes about Obamacare, and she has made her fair share, to date I have yet to see any option besides a health insurance industry press release that basicly says ‘Keep things as they are’. That type thinking is why we are in the mess we are in right now. Does Obamacare need refining and adapting ? No doubt it does. But at least it is out there, for real where it can be discussed, not kept in some secret handshake backroom where it’s refined for the benefit of the health care industry and lets the rest of us get screwed. Much has been said about the need for transparency in government. If there was ever a time for the GOP to start practicing this simple concept, the time is now. That and some progressive thinking, as opposed to the current GOP battlecry of ‘Back to the Future’. Yeah, we are all so ticked off that we are really ready to go back to George the 2nd and get ourselves done over again ? And the GOP wonders why they keep losing the moderate and independent voter’s. If it weren’t so tragic it might actually make a good skit on SNL.

  35. Snowe is very wrong.  Obama has this election in the bag.  The GOP has gotten WAY too radical and moderate swing voters will NOT vote for them…because of the Tea Party influences. http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2011/08/30/never-wrong-pundit-picks-obama-to-win-in-2012

  36. Mitt Romney will have a very difficult question to answer as the Republican nominee.  Ronald Reagan famously asked, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”.  If that question is asked of him, what does he say after “earning” over $40,000,000 in the last two years?  Mitt, you’re trying to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs.

  37. I CAN SEE THE DAM REPUBLICANS HAVE DONE SUCH A WONDERFUL JOB !! THATS WHY OUR COUNTRY IS IN THE SHAPE ITS IN —BECAUSE OF THE DAM REPUBLICANS WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT THE DAM RICH GETTING RICHER AND STAYING RICHER !!!!   I THINK ANYBODY WHO STEPPED INTO WHAT PRESIDENT OBAMA DID  WOULD HAVE BEEN IN NO DIFFRENT SITUATION BECAUSE OF THOSE DAM REPUBLICANS !!!   TO MANY TERMS FOR THE BUSH FAMILY RUINED US !!!!!  WILL WE EVER RECOVER AND GET BACK TO WHAT OUR COUNTRY IS SUPPOST TO BE ???  WE NEED TO STOP THE IMPORTS AND PUT OUR PEOPLE BACK TO WORK IS THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IF I WAS PRESIDENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I AM NOT A DEMOCRAT EITHER —– I AM INDEPENDANT !!!! —NI DONT PICK PEOPLE FOR WHO THEY — I PICK PEOPLE FOR WHAT I SEE THE BEST IN —- NOT BROKEN PROMISES YEAR AFTER YEAR !!   I THINK ALL POLITICIANS WHO RUN FOR OFFICE AND PROMISE THIS AND THAT FOR YOUR VOTES SHOULD HAVE TO SIGN A WRITTEN CONTRACT LIKE I DO WHEN I PROMISE THE BANK I WILL PAY THEM OR OTHER CONTRACTS THAT I AM OBLIGATED TO DO IN WRITING!!!!!

  38. Doesn’t matter what party is “in” all politicans want to do is spend everyone elses money, they want to divide this country into 2 classes, them who have and spent our money and us, who now can’t afford to pay attention.

  39. All this republican circle jerking is going to screw them over in the end.  Even Snowe is hated by the republicans because she is moderate or what they like to call them a rhino.   I’m not a huge Obama fan but in the end if the Grinch or Captain Magic Underpants wins the caucus I’m going to throw a vote to Obama because again Americans are getting f-ed over  by the lesser of two evils again.  If Romney or Gingrich get in we are guaranteed a new war with another quagmire third world country for oil profits that is just going to put the nail in the coffin for this country.

  40. Latest Poll,
56% Americans would vote out every single member of the House and Senate
55% Liberals, 55% Moderates 58% Conservatives say they want all members in Congress gone.
80% Americans disapprove the job Congress is doing.

  41. I did not think Snow would care if a Republican is in the White House, That being she acts more like a Democrat these days!

  42. Keep trying to convince yourself that the party of the oligarchs and religious nut jobs is going to beat the emergency response team that has been successfully cleaning up the epic economic, fiscal, and military catastrophes created by Republicans.

  43. My improvement or option:   get rid of the criminals, put in honest
people no matter what their party is. Return the country to its founding
principles. Cancel the Super Bowl if it’s so terribly dangerous to be
there, and stop treating Americans like common criminals. We aren’t the
    criminals.

  44. State Treasurer Poliquin Responds to Ethics Complaint , yep, it is a never ending battle with
these corrupt people. I say, get rid of them all and start fresh with 1 term folks as it was suppose to be.

  45. The same old eight-year-old republican pie.

Add a little  Bush, sprinkle with Cheney,  add a dash of Scooter Libby, and you have another WMD disaster.  Lies, more lies, torture,  illegal wiretapping.  Revealing the name of a CIA covert operative is revenge for uncovering the truth.

For Olympia and Susan all of that was not enough.  They wanted a double helping.  Unfortunately they’re unable to deal with a straight shooter.  A man they’ve attacked every day for three years because of his color.

Olympia stands with Mitch McConnell and John Boehner – the republican blockade against progress.  Block everything he attempts to achieve is their motto.  Slam him  daily for three years claiming he is not an American.  Block extension of unemployment funding.

Only vote for  his proposals if he agrees not to remove the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

    1. Add a little Obama, sprinkle some Van Jones, and a dash of the the American Communist Party and you have a complete communist takeover! Lies, more lies, torture, illegal wiretapping!  Keep voting, the worse is yet to come!

  46. Don’t count on having a republician back in the White House in 2013.  Change the tax laws, tax the rich, quit pinching the middle class.  Stop kissing up to the lobbyiest. Then we will talk about a republican in 2013.  And right now we have LePage and his republican ways. He hasn’t done anything except cause grief.

  47. People are broke Olympia, present company not with standing. Republicans represent big money, plain and simple. Big money has had it’s way for far too long in Washington and they have made a mess of our economy. Big money has shipped all our jobs overseas and staffed the ones that remain with illegals. Big money has juked everyone out of their retirement accounts, savings accounts, and their homes. A vote for Republicans is a vote for big money Olympia, don’t hold your breath.

  48. the majority of Mainers voted for President Obama. Senator Snowe says lets make him a one term president. She is obvioulsy pushing the national Republican platform and disregarding what the people in Maine want. thanks for the service Senator, but its time for a Democrat.

  49. Romney – Obama, they are both the same
     *Both are anti 2nd Amendment
*Both are for forced governmental healthcare
     *Both are pro abortion
*Both support the Quimby National Park

    Reject the Romney RINO

The only candidates that oppose the Quimby National Park as of today are Santorum & Gingrich

    1. Quimby National Park ====A national problem?????? Did your tin foil hat become crushed last night and you are not able to wear it this AM? The country has way too many problems that come before a freaking park in a state that  is failing at just about every thing.

      1. And your name should be “Uneducated”

I could be in no way described as a Marxist,,,, maybe a Capitalist, but not a Marxist

  50.      Republican in the White House…???  That would be another Snowe job….!!!!!
Time for her to retire with some dignity…

  51. Here is what I think of the current incarnation of the two party system. Party number one panders to the most base of human emotions. They vote every single time to enrich the rich and create more dispair for the middle and working class. And as one of them recently said, ” I don’t care about the very poor. They have a safety net.” Yes, that would be the safety net that he and the rest of the party have been working for 60yrs to dismantle.

The other party is just about the same, except they do not try to legislate our bedrooms, or perpetuate a war on women. They do however most always vote to make their corporate masters richer. But, they do at least take the time to throw the middle class and working poor a bone or two.

One party is becoming frighteningly regressive, and the other at least gives lip service to the idea of being progressive. One party wants to run our country based on Christian “sharia law” and the other believes your religion is your own business and does not belong in the legislative process.

So that is my take, vote for one and nothing changes, except women will have too take to the streets again to maintain their right to their own bodies. Vote for the other and most things will not change but at least all of the poor and the once middle class will not end up living under bridges.

  52. Keep dreaming Olive Oyl.  Your likely nominee out of this bunch of Republican clowns is Moneybags Romney, and Obama will beat him like a drum.  This ultra-phony-flipflopper is of, by, and for the ultra rich, could care less about anyone else, and is an unpatriotic stooge who hides his money in the Cayman Islands and in Swiss bank accounts rather than actually creating jobs with it here in America.  He’s a phony snake oil salesman, and he will be pounded at the polls along with the Maine ReThuglicans who will lose the Maine House and very possibly the Maine Senate as well.

  53. The republicans don’t stand a chance of regaining the White House with what they are offering up as options to Obama. The Bush years are too recent a memory for any thinking person to forget what the repugnants are all about. Kudos to the Obama administration for righting the ship after the mess of the previous eight years.

  54. I am a Reg. Dem. BUT I vote for the canidate not the party. I commend Olympia and Susan our respected Senators from Maine who do vote for the good of the people they represent not the Party!

  55. YOU will be gone this year. You have over stayed your visit big time. You can head to Florida  and your boyfriend LePage will be right behind you !!

  56. Snowe’s done… when she generalized saying that a Republican would get into office… no matter who it was ,  in essence she told the world that she is the party not the person… We don’t need any more people in any government office who can’t think with their own brain…

  57. More BS talk from Snowe.  She has been hiding from the Washington fray and doing NOTHING. She talks the party talk but that’s it. She has no useful ideas.  She should retire and take herself out of the running.

  58. Mitt Romney IS a Big business Democrat -GOP insider. It’s like restoring a classic car vs selling one off for parts. Nothing hard about the latter. So please quit touting Romney’s business success, there is none. I suppose he will sell off America too.

He has no experience starting up a business, he has experience taking over businesses and breaking them up and selling off the parts. Totally different.

I’m a Republican and I would never ever vote for Romney. I will vote 3rd party first.

If America want to make it’s bed with Romney, then they will Get 4 more of Obama.

    STUPID AMERICANS never learn

  59. Thank you Mr. D’amboise for calling out Sen. Snowe on her NDAA vote.
Civil libertarians of every political stripe should be able to agree on the repeal of this law.

  60. Many conservatives in Maine are ready and willing to vote across party lines.

Like most, I will be voting for the candidates that best represent my concern areas.
     *Oppose governmental healthcare mandate
*Fully support the 2nd Amendment, and not allow anymore modifications or restrictions
*Abortion: minimally I would like to see stricter penalties against medical professionals that break any existing laws.
*Committed to keeping a fully capable military, and not allow cuts to balance overall budgets.
*Openly opposed to the Quimby National Park… (No candidate has yet to achieve this. While there are two that have stated they will be releasing something soon, there are two others that have indicated that an Obama supported National Park is not a National Issue— Look for who those candidates are after Tuesday)

  61. Unfortunately, Sen. Snowe (who will be reelected) may be operating on blind hope that any of the R candidates can defeat Pres. Obama (especially the 3 dwarfs).

  62. The G.O.P. Presidential Slogan should be, “Maine Doesn’t Matter”.  Not one Presidential candidate showed his face. Possibly they are trying to distance themselves from our Governor and Snowe.?

  63. bush created 6.5 trillion dollors of this debt Obama the rest it’s pretty clear this problem comes from both sides of the track. My question is this are republican’s really going to vote a guy into office who avoid’s his duty as an American?I’m talking about hiding his money away in of-shore account’s safe from taxation?I pay my taxes/property taxes as i’m sure 90% of the rest of the country does.Guess it doesn’t really matter we import 70% of our product our biggest export is what scrap metal. They could triple all taxes across the board for the next 100 generation’s and probebly just cover the interest on our debt maybe. We are joining the Romans in the history books probebly within the next 5 years or so.
Ithink it would be better to tell the American people the truth and to prepare as best they can and hope for the best.

  64. All parties need to work more together. NOW more than anyother time in USA history. Sen Snowe has worked for the eople of Maine, unlike many other Senators. Ther is too much party politics toprotect the party. Everyone in DC seems to have forgoten about ‘We the People”.. Obama must go. He is an embarrasment to the USA, and a disgrace as a President.

  65. Romney has the looks and the charm. He is good at presenting himself as being a very diplomatic person. The problem is when you start to peel back those superficial layers and observe that very little substance is being offered. Pay attention to topics that make him uncomfortable and you can tell where his true loyalties are. He does not really care about the working class other than their potential to work for minimum wage and make profits for investors. He has no intention of fixing our monetary system because he and his cronies are part of the small percentage of people who benefit so much from the current one. He panders to the clueless and fearful by offering to increase our already stupidly oversized military juggernaut. He will also continue to support unconstitutional legislation that takes away our rights and freedoms. He is too scared to offer a list of the spending cuts it would take to actually balance the budget because it would negatively impact the majority of voters; consequently, it won’t happen. He offers no tangible plan to avoid monetary collapse and the resulting social chaos; he will just let all of the suffering play out. Regardless, he will keep smiling and the lemmings will vote for him.

On the other hand, Ron Paul doesn’t have a whole lot going on in the looks department. He’s not going to pander for your vote; he’s not going to tell you everything you’d like to hear in order to become President. However, he will veto every unnecessary spending bill, thereby reducing kickbacks and corruption. He will also put an end to military expansionism and tell the war profiteers to take a hike. Ron Paul will remove the incentives that keep immigrants coming here illegally and promote legal immigration. He will also save Social Security by avoiding bankruptcy and he will even try to fix our broken monetary system. Ron Paul will do away with the Patriot act, the President’s ability to indefinitely detain American citizens without a trial, and bills like the Enemy Expatriation Act, which would give the government the power to strip you of your citizenship. Ron Paul will also keep the government from regulating the internet. Meanwhile, the other candidates support all of this nonsense and will continue to spit on the Constitution.

  66. Coming from Snowe this sounds more like a threat than a promise! Seems to me we need fresh blood in the Senate from Maine! Snowe and Collins have been there too long..too many Corporate ties..we need Grass roots people to represent the 99%! BTW Recall LePage!

  67. It appears to me that Senator Snowe spends more time in Maine when she’s running for reelection than at any other point in her term of office. I have called her local office, sent e mails and letters to her several times and have received only one reply, obviously written by a staffer. Margaret Chase Smith’s replies were always very short and to the point but they always came.  Senator Collins doesn’t do much better. though she does return home very frequently. What bothers me more about her is her  constant tendency to get on board the fastest moving bandwagon, hence a lot more news coverage. I think both Snowe and Collins have been in office long enough.

  68. This was a sham. The caucus has always been open in the past. At the Bangor location once the votes were in you knew how it went. Them keeping it a secret for two weeks smells of fraud.
