BANGOR, Maine — A Medway man who police say attempted to run over an Orono police sergeant with a car during a 15-mile high-speed chase Friday night through Old Town, Orono and Milford is being held on $20,000 cash bail, a jail official said Monday.
Lauren MacArthur, 27, remained at the Penobscot County Jail on Monday night.
MacArthur, who allegedly reached speeds of nearly 100 mph during the chase, is charged with aggravated attempted murder, felony eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, as well as operating after suspension, violation of a condition of release, refusing to submit to arrest and criminal speed.
MacArthur, who was behind the wheel of a 2007 Toyota Yaris, could go to prison for up to 30 years if convicted of aggravated attempted murder for trying to run the police sergeant over.
The sergeant was able to jump out of the path of MacArthur’s vehicle to avoid being hit, said Maine State Police Trooper Chris Hashey, who was pursuing MacArthur and eventually used his cruiser to ram into the car MacArthur was driving.
MacArthur was driving south on Interstate 95 about 9:15 p.m. Friday when Hashey attempted to pull him over for an obstructed registration sticker and license plate a mile north of the Stillwater Avenue exit in Old Town. When he attempted to stop MacArthur, Hashey said he believed there was an outstanding warrant for him and that MacArthur was armed and dangerous.
It was not until the chase ended that Hashey learned the warrant for MacArthur no longer was active.
The driver refused to stop, Hashey said Saturday. Instead, MacArthur sped up, took the exit onto Stillwater Avenue and headed into downtown Old Town, the trooper said. MacArthur took Center Street to U.S. Route 2 and turned right toward Orono. Once in Orono, the driver turned right on College Avenue.
An Orono police sergeant who was directing traffic at the Alfond Arena entrance to the University of Maine was attempting to clear College Avenue of traffic when MacArthur purposely swerved toward him, according to Hashey.
After almost hitting the police officer, MacArthur crossed Stillwater Avenue and continued speeding on College Avenue Extension, according to the state trooper. One of MacArthur’s tires was punctured by a spike mat set out by deputies with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, but MacArthur reportedly kept going.
He turned right on Gilman Falls Road and led police into Milford. As MacArthur was turning left onto Route 178, Hashey said he rammed his cruiser into the car MacArthur was driving. That disabled the car, the trooper said, but MacArthur jumped out and fled on foot toward Bradley.
Hashey caught up with MacArthur and placed him under arrest about 9:30 p.m.
The cruiser had damage to the front bumper and front passenger-side lights, according to the trooper. The Yaris, which is not registered to MacArthur, had significant damage.
Because he is charged with felonies, MacArthur had to appear before a judge on Monday at the Penobscot Judicial Center for his bail to be set.
In addition to setting MacArthur’s bail, the judge also barred him from driving and consuming alcohol or illegal drugs, the jail official said. The judge placed MacArthur under house arrest if he manages to make bail, he said.
MacArthur could face additional charges once the case is reviewed by the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office.
Hashey said a firearm was found near MacArthur’s car once it was stopped. If it is linked to MacArthur, he could be charged in federal court with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Recanted.
Glad I didn’t let this guy borrow my Yaris!
The judge barred him from doing illegal drugs? really?
Throw this guy in the pen and toss the key.
what did you think he was going to do give him permission?..If this was your family would you be so quick to say that? I doubt it
Yeah…I would…and have.
Absolutely. A danger to society is a danger whether theyre family or not.
Luckily this guy didn’t kill anyone, like he was TRYING to.
Hello rainbowsandwich go find your lucky stars…they are usually in the shape of rainbows!!! Everytime you go to court, everytime a judge sets bail the same thing is said to ALL not just him hello…..be a little smarter…IT”S ROUTINE
Again. Idk what your problem is, but you need to stop harassing people.
your harrassing by putting your crap on here…you don’t want to be harrassed then stop harrassing this family!!!!!!!
I’m fairly certain rainbow was stating that it is illegal to use illegal drugs…. being told you’re not allowed to use illegal drugs is a little redundant.
Also, I’m not sure what your lucky star reference is all about. It literally makes 0 sense. Please stop harassing people. Its tragic about Lauren, but you can take your anger out appropriately. If you do stupid things and end up on BDN, you should expect comments. Harassing anyone that has anything bad to say about lauren, is childish, and isn’t going to accomplish anything positive for him, or your family. In fact, acting like this, makes your family look worse. I suggest logging off the computer for a bit and focusing on helping your family.
Sad,all he had to do is stop.
maybe he did not think…do you always think in a rash decision and make the right choice?? Maybe he panicked…..oooo you lay golden eggs right
When ever the blue lights came on behind me I stopped! When you don’t stop it just makes things worse.
I’m going to write this on behalf of Lauren’s family…We agree with some of what people are saying but as a whole I highly doubt anyone knows him or the complexity of his life. My brother has fought as I’m sure many others have to find a way to function when it is some times nearly impossible…..I’m not going to blame this particular situation on anything except for his own bad judgement. I just would ask out of respect for myself and my 2 sisters that no personal attacks or rude comments are made about him, my father(who is deceased) or his mother on here..It is hurtful enough that this has happened and we are glad that no one was hurt…Thank you….
there is this thing called free will no one is making you read these comments, step away from the computer if you don’t want to read what people think of your brother. Should we all think he’s a great man? A wonderful person for potentially putting others at risk? I’ve seen worse on here.
Making excuses for him is ridiculous. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had it rough at some point in their lives, that aren’t dealing with something. Every day we make choices. Evidently he makes poor ones. Nasty comments on the BDN is a small price to pay for his poor judgement. Get him some help if that is what he needs. Too bad that he could, evidently, care less about what he is putting his family through. You are not the BDN police, flag away, but remember that doesn’t mean they will agree with you and pull the comments.
I understand that there is free will and I don’t have to read anything but really would you be able to just not read anything about your family or just let people say what they wanted?I agree with freedom of speech trust me I do.But I don’t think many of us would be able to just let perfect strangers bash someone you cared about no matter what they did. I never once asked anyone to think of him as a great man..have you ever read anywhere that I have asked that of anyone?..No. Is to have courtesy for the family. Am I asking you to think anything of him other than what you do? No..I can read whatever people say and may want to respond to it and I can handle it. I understand why so many people feel the way they do. I really do.. As I said in the last article comments he has aunts uncles and grandparents that read the paper that’s is my only concern here. At 27 he can get his own help if he desired it I can’t do that for him. I never said I was the BDN police but you know what when I read something about my DEAD father and his mother in comments that’s not relevant I will flag….The only time…It’s why I did last time and I will continue to do so..if needed
Honneyb7- be thankful it ended the way it did. There are several thousand fans that line college ave during a hockey game. He easily could have a bullet in him right now. Luckily not the case for him and luckily he did not take the innocent life of somebody else, including all of us readers who’s families were the ones who lined the street doing something more meaningful in life than running from the cops.
You act as if he meant or tried to hurt someone…some people don’t get it…..He obviously was not from this area….yup he made a mistake a bad judgement. I would love to be a bug on the wall when someone you care about makes a bad judgement so we can be demeaning to you cause after all this is how you are treating this family. Leave them alone they have enough on their plates without ignorant slurs from people like you. No one got hurt thank god, and he says dont judge others when you yourself can be judged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If this is bothering them to read these comments then they don’t have to read them!
aaww your feelings are hurt…:(
He meant to run over a police officer…..
NO HE DIDNT!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was in the road. That man is 1 of my buddies he was caught up in all that was going on yes, very bad desision i know if he could take it back he would he will man up for his actions that night u people need to stop bashing him.Do you bash everybody that gets in trouble? He is a great guy do anything for his close people but when u get caught up your thought process gets messed up. If you dont know what its like then everybody just needs to worry about there own and be happy for there lives and not worry about the people making the paper.
I agree with you Medwayboy. Probably he has anxiety and panicked when he saw a cop, knowing he was driving without a licence and got fight and flight and just ran. Heard through the grape vine the kid has PDSD. We shouldnt judge people because we are not him. He made a bad decision and it could have been really bad, but thank God it wasent. I am sure he is saying to himself today ” what the hell have I done”. He obviously needs some counseling and maybe some anxiety meds. I heard he went toward the cop after he hit the spike strip and when a tire goes flat it can go all over the road. I m sure he wasent trying to run over a cop. The cops just like to find as many charges as they can to make it more dramatic and make the situation more interesting, plus it sells more news papers. The whole world loves drama today.
where were you at the time?? damn thats too bad
Something doesn’t add up. So the officer was also traveling AT NIGHt time on I95 and the inspection sticker and registration was obscured (most likely by snow). The officer knew the driver (at NIGHt TIME). Tried to stop him. During in which he THOUGHT he had a warrant with a caution tagged on it “armed and dangerous”. At this point, there is no indication that he ran him through NCIC. Suspect failed to stop and a chase begins risking everyone on the road..over what a traffic ticket (remember warrant has not been run or verfied which means that police can not detain or act on a “suppose to be warrant belief”. The chase continues for several miles endangering EVERYONE to include the officer..for what a traffic ticket? Chase ends and then the officer runs his information and therre is no warrant. Poor police work if you ask me. I see a headline down the road that states State police kill innocent passengers/people walking on the street after man with warrant prove unfounded”. It sounds like this guy needed a reason to chase so he made it up because he needed something to tell his supervisor. Anyone ever think ….ok well what happen with the warrant you thought he had??..ppffftt
honneyb7….in one of your posts you say no one got hurt…..I say, this time? You have to call a horse a horse if it’s true. No sympathy from this poster.
Yes I did say we are glad no one got hurt because we are. How is that looking for sympathy in any way shape or form? It’s not ..He’s my brother and I don’t feel sorry for him. I wish it was different and wish I could change things but I can’t…but still love him always will. So why you think I’m asking for sympathy in my comment is beyond me when I don’t even have it for him myself
Since you stated you ” have no sympathy for him”, does this mean your family shares your feelings as well? And if so, does this mean no one is going to attempt to post bail?
This incident is really stiring up a hornets nest,………….I think even one of the trooper’s relatives, possibly his sister, posted on the earlier article, accusing us of being employees of Walmart, and using BIG words.
I don’t know my families position on posting bail and wouldn’t share it if I did…somethings are O.K. not to disclose …I will “feel bad” but not sympathetic…Unlike what some people are posting and even his actions have shown..Lauren is FAR from a stupid man .He is very intelligent…Some times not having the best judgement doesn’t mean anything other than that…and regardless of anyone’s opinion I know that is true with him.
“Intelligent people” know right from wrong.I’m sure when they released him from prison they explained what he could do and not do. I’m sure that possessing a firearm wasn’t one of them.
BAD96 exactly I would hate to get your advice. Why don’t you just zip it and leave this family alone…go check your damn closet!!!!!!!!!!!!! DING DING yup look at that theres a past
I saw that. The last thing he or our family wanted was any attention…trust me this isnt easy…
Most of the ones with the brains understand that this was not a purpsoely attention getter. Sorry for all the negativity
I have a relative who works in Corrections. She said that she sees people with your point of view whenever they have visiting going on. Family members torn between wanting to love the person in jail, but also not agreeing with what they’ve done to get there. She said that crimes are committed by people, but families take the hit as well. That being said, he’s a grown man, and making decisions that affects him, the family, and the public are his responsibility. Like all of us, he too has to answer for those decisions.
He was TRYING to hurt people! You have more sympathy for your brother, a career criminal and attempted murderer, than the poor guy he tried to run over. Luckily no one got hurt. But that may not be the case next time. This all must be very hard for you, but it is what it is…. He had many chances to change his life and chose this. The chase happened right outside my house… What if he hit my house and killed one of my kids? I don’t want to give him the chance to do that. My brother chose a life of crime as well. I would help him try to get his life on track, and he never would. So I did the best thing for him and stopped justifying his actions. Hes doing a five year sentence, and I hope it does him good.
He was ooo wow we have a PHD in physchiatry….where in the world was that posted…he was trying to hurt people…wow your have lots of anger and sounds to me like you had better take your anger and figure out why you are so mad…could it be that it hits close to home with you…People make mistakes….oooo thats right you have a pot of gold in your lucky charms!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wtf? This guy didn’t ‘ make a mistake’ he purposely broke the law over and over and then tried to run over a cop. Idk wtf your problem is, but you really need to stop harassing people. I’m sorry that your friend is in jail, but it’s not my fault.
so do you and this is why it bothers you sooo much cause you think your backside dont stink…go smell it
You need to grow up, dude. Your friend or whatever, tried to KILL someone!!!! And you’re sticking up for him!!!! No wonder why he grew up so messed up!
really is that fact or your facts from your backside?? I think we all should just keep following the facts and not making up your own facts or what you believe is real cause your baby feelings got hurt!!
who asked you to have sympathy??? Did anyone ask for that??? Nope…Mistakes happen go see yours and fix them now…maybe god will forgive you…maybe not!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His criminal record speaks for itself, how many chances do you give a career criminal?
I don’t know how many chances to you give anyone with anything that’s affected you or your family?..Whats your “bottom line”?
keep your chin up you are not alone in this
fact is he has gotten in trouble. So this does not make him a bad person. Fact is he has made some wrong decisions, but that does not make him a bad person either. After all we are all gods children whether we sin or not…Is this not why this man took his life for our sins. Is this not the truth?? God says that we are all his children and that we all sin and must be forgiving. So he made a bad decision a few times in his life…look in your closet…I guarantee someone in your family has made a mess of something somewhere and if you say no well then you have not honestly looked. NO ONE is perfect. So please stop being cruel…did you get your PHD in phychiatry??? No cause you would not be looking with complete ridicule!!! thanks and leave our family alone…before you critisize others check your back door and check deeply!!! My nephew is a wonderful boy and he just has a hard time finding his way and he does not deal with stress as others do…He has other ways of dealing that is not always the right decision.
Yes, all respectable members of society steal guns, do drugs and try to kill police officers. give it a break.
If you want people to leave your family alone, teach your family not to act like this, or stop being disrespectful. Yes, people in my family have done things they’re not proud of. But we didn’t tell them it’s okay that they they did it, and attack the people that have had to suffer because of it. Also, no one in my family has been messed up enough to attempt to kill an innocent man.
who suffered?? who is hurt??? and who said it was ok?? go get your pretend phd self into another case you no nothing about. Are you looking for you lucking charms in a bag of mental??
Is there such a career as criminal career??? hmmm now I wonder or is that a bashing of this family….You are a negative person..zip the lip and look under your bed and in your own closet space…It’s dark in there…………………..
might wanna get a faster car next time turbo. Toyota Yaris ain’t exactly a get away car.
A capable weapons carrier though. Who’d of thunk it…….
klokihuuoih
Some people never learn. He was convicted of breaking into places before, gets out of prison and is up to his old tricks. He needs to be locked up again!!!!
Slow learner.
so there is all sorts of these people in life. WOW so with all these people in the world that are slow learners we are suppose to turn our backs on them just cause they have made a mistake. I would think that at that time in life would be the time that a certain someone would then lift you up and carry you in the direction that would be needed. After all has Jesus after looked away from your life?? I think not it is then when he has carried you!! Mistakes or no mistakes…slow or smart we are all the same
my familys house got broken into. gun cabinet demolished. 2 guns stolen. cops dusted for prints. found lauren macarthurs whole handprint. interesting…..
everyone should just look into their own deep dark closets before making remarks on this case. Keep it civil and stay on topicNo vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked. keep this in mind all and stop harrassing this family
I agree with you Medwayboy. Probably he has anxiety and panicked when he saw a cop, knowing he was driving without a licence and got fight and flight and just ran.
