Strong inside game powers UMaine women by Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The post duo of Samantha Baranowski and Corinne Wellington combined for 24 points and 13 rebounds Saturday afternoon to power the University of Maine women’s basketball team to a 57-44 victory over Stony Brook.

Brittany Williams tallied 11 points and Danielle Walczak posted 10 for the Black Bears, while Becca Knight of Alfred added eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

It was the second win in three games for coach Richard Barron’s Black Bears, who return to action Wednesday with a home game against New Hampshire at Memorial Gym in Orono.

UMaine (5-15, 2-5 AE) has now surpassed the win total for all of last season. Stony Brook fell to 4-16, 1-6 in league play.

UMaine took the lead for good with a 10-0 scoring surge in the first half.

With the Seawolves leading 6-4, Courtney Anderson of Greene opened the run with a free throw at the 15:36 mark. Williams followed with a 3-pointer, then Ashleigh Roberts hit two foul shots to put the Bears up 10-6 with 12:50 left in the half.

Layups 1:10 apart by Wellington and Baranowski gave UMaine a 14-6 lead with 10:35 to play.

The Bears eventually extended their advantage to as many as 15 points en route to a 33-20 lead at halftime.

UMaine then limited Stony Brook to three points over the first 10-plus minutes of the second half to make it a comfortable 49-23 margin and the Bears were able to close it out.

The Bears committed 24 turnovers that resulted in 14 points for the Seawolves, but UMaine also scored 16 points off 15 miscues by the hosts.

UMaine shot 45 percent from the field (21-for-47) and out-rebounded Stony Brook 42-30. The Bears scored 24 points in the paint.

Taylor Burner and Whitney Davis paced Stony Brook with 11 and 10 points, respectively. However, the Seawolves shot an abysmal 26 percent (15-for-57) from the floor.
