BANGOR, Maine — An inmate who served time for writing a threatening letter to Maine Gov. Paul LePage now stands accused of threatening to kill President Barack Obama.
Thirty-year-old Leroy Eugene Dunn pleaded guilty to terrorizing last February for the LePage letter, which he wrote while in the Piscataquis County Jail.
Now Dunn is accused of writing a letter threatening Obama while at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, where he’s serving a three-year sentence for drug trafficking.
Dunn was sentenced in June to 60 days for threatening LePage. He served that sentence while in jail awaiting resolution of the drug charges.
His lawyer tells the Portland Press Herald that Dunn’s actions were the result of a change in medication and that he should not be prosecuted.

this guy is not that bad, just needs some serious help
But he’s such a harmless, gentle giant!
Obviously another defective machine with short circuits in the engine room….
…are his parents first cousins?
Are you trying to tempt me into saying something that will get me banned? Like saying “No, they’re brother and sister: HIS!” ? You can’t make me do it! :-o
I’m glad he’s mad at the politicians and not me.
yeah? but the politicians are MAD you, and the rest of us.
I think this guy is the fat lineman from “Remember the Titans”
Auditioning for a lifetime check. Doing a good job at that. Some people will feel sorry for him and think he needs free money and healthcare for the rest of his life.
All I can say is “of mice and men” keep your cats away!
Dont you mean the rabbits George?
There but for the luck of the draw go any of us
mi sentiments precisely!!
The old saying, ” I grew taller than my hair “, originated with this monster. Look! It’s a full foot below the top of his head!
That dude could eat his lawyer!
He looks as though Gov. Lepage is the presiding judge.
we should elect this guy! haha he’s a character
Here is another perfect example of sombody blaming everything on everyone else instead of taking just a smidge portion of the responsibility.
“Nice try, Leroy!!” But next time you choose to sell drugs next to a Brewer Elementary school and get caught maybe you will actually learn a lesson.
So threaten the world if you must, it just goes to show that 3 years obviously isn’t long enough for you.
I am continuously amazed by the ignorance displayed on this site. Is this what I should assume most Mainers are like?? No compassion? No ability to GRASP that people truly are mentally ill and how dramatically it can affect them? Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t make it any less true.
Dear BDN, Why is this piece of garbage news? We fools are feeding, housing, and clothing this excuse for a man. Find something else to report.
Wow that must be the infamous “Bubba” we here so much about in prison!
This guy is a prime candidate for lethal injection! He is one of those criminals that can not be rehabilitated! We need punishments that fit the crimes and send clear messages to these criminals. Let’s make prison a place to fear and not a place to go for free room and board, health insurance and an education!!!
We’ll give you the needle moosepoops. You can have the satisfaction of looking him square in the eye when you dispatch him to meet his maker. Passing judgement on others can be so fun.
OK you think he is such a great guy who only deals in drugs threatens the Governor and the President, fine. If this is the way you really feel, tell the judge and maybe he will let you take custody and support him! You can also pay for his defense and his health & dental care so the tax payers don’t have too! I have no problem with that!
you know leroy on a personal level i take it??? I’d really hope you wouldn’t make the assumption that he can’t be rehabilitated just by these couple of stories?? ignorance becomes of you, hope your child or loved one NEVER has to deal with a mental illness, lord knows they won’t be able to count on you.
Apparently you are the one who needs to get educated on criminal behavior and mental illness. If you know this man personally please take the time to explain to everyone why he is charged with “trafficking drugs” then threatening to kill the Governor and the President! I am all ears and willing to listen to your first hand knowledge!
He’s a severely mentally ill person who has committed crimes. He needs monitoring and to be taken out of the environment that gets him into trouble.
BY THE WAY, DO A LITTLE RESEARCH. I’M FINE WITH THE DEATH PENALTY FOR THOSE DESERVING BUT RESEARCH HAS SHOWN TIME AND AGAIN THAT IT DOES NOT DETER CRIME. PERIOD. Anymore brilliant, evolved ideas??
maybe he just needs a hug?
That’s what his caseworkers in prison want for him.
I am VERY aware how lame this sounds but if this kid had not just hugs but a different childhood, who knows where he”d be.
Anyone who maintains that’s just liberal whiney nonsense, terribly sorry, YOU ARE IGNORANT. Coupled with mental illness a poor childhood is not going to have a happy ending.
yes buzhlo hes is harmless to be honest, he’s a coward i myself i know Leroy i aint to proud to say that but it’s the truth and im glad he’s locked up too bad it is only for a short period of time. they should lock him up and throw away the key. he aint never going to learn and the people who locked him up aint never gonna learn, i mean seriously they are pretty much saying hey it’s okay to sell drugs around a school because their allowing him to get out soon enough granted its years but that’s still too soon. a lot of people now a days dont even look at people selling drugs around kids or a school as a crime, truely it is and people shouldn’t be so easy on people. leroy you don’t think at all all you care about is yourself and that’s a shame but it’s the truth.. and come on blame it on him not being on the right medication ha that’s no excuse because theres people out there that aint even on medication that need to be but you dont hear about them threathen people’s life or just being plain dumb.
they’re not saying it’s okay to sell drugs next to a school. no offense but judging by the way you talk you lack intelligence if not common sense. he got 3 years because he worked as an informant. and as for not hearing people who need meds not doing stuff like this you couldn’t be more wrong. the ONLY reason your hearing about this is because he was already in jail when he made the threat to lepage, and the fact that he’s still in jail threatening the president. OBVIOUSLY he needs help, not judgement from any of us. ignorance is the root of all evil…
I don’t know who you are but I know Leroy as well. I suspect not nearly as well as you and that’s what makes your comments so sad. If you do know Leroy then you know he’s “not right in the head” to use vernacular you can understand. That doesn’t mean we just throw him away. A lot of what he does is for acceptance and he allows others to take advantage of him. Again, if you DO know him then you know i’m right. I’m not suggesting we agree with a person’s actions. I’m saying we figure out why they do these things. He’s not evil or spiteful like many of the really nasty addicts I’ve encountered in Bangor that for some reason i’m thinking you know. wonder why??
Please stopping typing “AIN’T”. It makes you appear not so smart. And some people REALLY DO have irrational thoughts and do irrational things when off their meds. Welcome to the enlightenment of the 20th century. maybe in a few years you can catch up with the rest of us in the 21st century.
There may be lots of reasons in Jessica’s comment for her to sound “not so smart”, but who are you to stick your nose in the air admonishing her for “typing AIN’T”??!! It’s in your own handle, for gawd’s sake!
Your blatant arrogance is un-effin-believable!
Glad to see THAT”S what you gleaned from that exchange.
The idea that the word is so deeply ingrained that she knowingly TYPES poor grammar is beyond ignorant and I simply can’t take her. seriously. And YES, I would say that face to face. Want to be taken seriously? At least appear as though you belong in the conversation.
My point was, Leroy needs constant care and unfortunately, the cheapest form is jail.
Thanks for another example to prove my point.
And how you any better. No comment on the issue just trashing me. SAME THING. POT, MEET KETTLE The difference is that I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUE
I can guarantee that if I look at a history of both of our post that I out weigh you ten to one on posts that are actually addressing issues.
So where do you stand? All mentally ill people are useless and should be locked up????????
That issue is irrelevant to the issue I have with the WAY you answered Jessica. It couldn’t have been done without the condescending editorializing of her obviously hard to follow post??
If you want a New York Times crossword puzzle quality conversation, this site is obviously not always going to satisfy you!
As far as the history of my comments (it’s not a competition), then all you have to do is click on ‘follow’.I usually just state my opinion/remark, and have found that a conversation here can be a futile back and forth waste of time. You will find that I do have a respectable 4:1 ‘like’ ratio, though.
Signed, commoncivilityaintsocommon
You and Sally Fields huh? , “You like me”
Actually the issue IS the issues. Look at the top of the page. Do you have an opinion or just more of the same. I have no interest in a “conversation” as you put it. My point is, you peruse this article so you must have some interest so unless your the courtesy police then I can only assume you have an opinion.
Are you just here to pile on the mentally ill?
Should we just lump all mentally ill people together?????
Are they just using it as an excuse? Are they just lazy???
Stop me when you disagree….sheeesh.
You appear enlightened enough to come to the defense of someone less capable and I do apologize. But the fact is, An UNINFORMED (ignorant) opinion along with the poor grammar just angers me. The idea that someone like that may be influencing someone else is scary.
I have read your many comments on this article directed at everyone who expresses an idea, solution to the problem that he caused, opinions, and yes judgements and if they don’t fall in line with your position. you insult, or call us names you don’t even know the meaning of (like ignorant).
When I suggested the Three Strikes Law, You didn’t bother to research it, instead, you called me ignorant. If you did, you might find it a viable solution to some of your suggestions
You seem to think because he is mentally ill he should not be punished. You are the mental health expert so only you know how ill Mr. Dunn is or how he should be treated. I don’t believe he is as ill as you think he is.
You call him a Teddybear, indicating he is harmless. I got news for you, people who distribute drugs, terrorize, have “lengthy criminal history” (you have failed to mention) are not harmless.
You want to argue with commentors when they use words such as “aint” when you can’t think of a decent repy to their statement. So I would like to suggest to you, stop attacking others for expressing their opinion, stop your yelling (using all caps) quit calling names and insulting people, increase your vocabulary, brush up on your grammer and spelling.

yes the changes in his medication made him write a threatening to our president….ummm ok
Maybe it was a lack of medication that made him write it. I’ve seen it happen.
This guy is a perfect example of why we need the “Three Strikes you’re Out Law”.
Your a perfect example of the rampid ignorance that pervades our society. This man is mentally ill. If you can’t GRASP that it doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
If he is mentally ill, why is he in prison?
Because the system stinks. The fact is it cost a lot more to treat the mentally ill then it does to jail them.
He is disabled, I know that. As in on SSI, so he has insurance but frankly, people that can’t navigate through the system tend to get left behind.

I’ve made my case over and over so don’t try the blame game with me. I point out ignorance when I see it.. SORRY
I’M not suggesting he’s harmless he’s not. What i’m saying is that throwing him back in jail and publicizing him with an ignorant eye to his mental illness is irresponsible. The BDN, along with the rest of us should be asking why did this happen? How did he get there.
My understanding of three strikes is three offenses and your in jail for life. It’s not exactly a new or obscure concept.Do you really think that’s the solution? Someone gets caught with 3 pills and they go to jail for life?
Perhaps if this were someone you knew your entire life. If you had witnessed how they,”Unfolded” you would be more understanding.
And YOU are a perfect example of why people like him are out walking around schools selling drugs, terrorizing and commiting a long lists of violations. I do GRASP he is mentally ill, hence the mention of the Three Strikes Law. So now get off your soap box and write someting that is relevant to the article that makes some common sense.
I thought prison mail was subject to being opened, read and reviewed before it was sent out or given as incoming mail to prisoners. Perhaps it depends on the institution.
You would think that someone at the prison would be looking at the mail an inmate is sending to political leaders after he has been convicted of threatening them through letters he has sent from while incarcerated.
Dude is 6’9″ and probably weighs-in around 375. Too bad he didn’t focus his attention less on drug offenses and instead on becoming an offensive lineman. The guy’s a freakin’ monster (hell, I’m 6’5″, 250, but I’d still hate to line up against him on a field).
he really is THAT big. but frankly, a lost teddy bear willing to do stupid things for acceptance. That’s exactly who he is.
I say let dumbo out and give the secret service some target pratice
I say you have as much insight and depth as a puddle. I know this man. he is a mess admittedly. But he suffers from severe mental illness. Know what you speak of. Your ignorance is showing.
so he’s being held in a facility for the criminally insane……?
if not, and you care about his well being, then I say that you need to get off the comments section and do something about it…
You are wrong, He is mentally ill but NOT severely! Because I believe his illness didn’t make him distribute drugs or a terrorist I wouldn’t call him a “Teddybear”, I’d call him CONVICT! So if I’m ignorant as you say, then YOU explain why he’s not guilty or shouldn’t be incarcerated. BTW your insults only show YOUR sensibility!
I agree
I am only going by his behavior, but if he was psychotic he would not be able to handle a drug business….he probably has a personality disorder & they DO know right from wrong, they just do what they want to do. If he acts like a “teddybear” it is because he WANTS to…most of these people with personality disorders can appear however they want- its’ all about them. Such people are great at fooling others & it sounds as if he has fooled you….no reason tho, for you to insult others.
There are MANY different personality disorders that have absolutely nothing to do with what you’ve described. Your speaking as though “personality disorder” is a diagnosis . Honestly, Google, it’s right there. Then get back to me and tell me your statement makes any sense. Which personalty disorder? What’s the theory on how he came to have this disorder? What you don’t seem to grasp is that a severely ingrainded personality disorder doesn’t make one psychotic. It warps a persons emotion perception based on passed experiences, to the point of what may seem seem irrational to others. The irony is that if the person could give you an explanation to what they go through emotionally you may just understand. You wouldn’t be able to relate and it may seem strange but at least you would understand why they do many of the things they do..
By the way, there are many people living among us that have been diagnosed with a personality disorder. You may know them but have no idea. They live a normal life just like you do. PLEASE, know what you speak of.

Told ya then and I’ll say it again…This doofus didn’t have a political platform…he was just a doofus…
i have know this guy all my life and his parents. they are for sure dumb and his parents are too closely related to have had kids together. this guy has never been a good kid his mother let him run to roads like a caveman anddidnt care what he did.
leroy was never shown LOVE, or ATTENTION. SO EVEN IF IT IS BAD ATTENTION IT IS GOOD TO HIM IN HIS HEAD
Personally i think he was blowing off steam on the Obama issue. I definitely think he needs to be evaluated.Threatening Le-page & Obama.Yup deeply disturbed come to mind. Threatening to harm Lepage or Kill Obama is not only absurd but goes to show the mind set
Take all medications away from him but the diet pills and he will probley straighten out.
